Our aim was to assess the release level of heparin-binding protein (HBP) in sepsis and septic shock under the Third International Consensus Definitions for Sepsis and Septic Shock (Sepsis-3). ⋯ A high level of HBP in plasma is associated with sepsis, which might be a useful diagnostic marker in patients with suspected sepsis.

Stage B heart failure (HF) is defined as an asymptomatic abnormality of the heart structure or function. The circulating level of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is elevated in symptomatic patients with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction caused by a structural or functional abnormality. This study investigated the association of the NT-proBNP level with echocardiography-detected cardiac structural or diastolic abnormalities in asymptomatic subjects with preserved LV systolic function (ejection fraction >50%). ⋯ Diastolic dysfunction is not associated with higher NT-proBNP levels, whereas preclinical cardiac structural abnormalities, as well as older age, female sex, lower BMI, and higher creatinine level, are associated with higher NT-proBNP levels.

The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement has been developed as a guideline for reporting systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Despite the prevalent use of the PRISMA statement in medicine and nursing, no studies have examined authors' perception of it. The purpose of this study is to explore the perception of the PRISMA statement of authors who published reviews, meta-analyses, or both in nursing journals. ⋯ Most respondents perceived the PRISMA statement as important. Items related to information sources, selection, search-flow presentation, summary of findings, limitations and interpretation were deemed more important while the registration was deemed less so.

To determine time to opioid cessation post discharge from hospital in persons who had been admitted to hospital for a surgical procedure and were previously naïve to opioids. ⋯ Opioid initiation post-surgical hospital admission leads to chronic use of opioids in a small percentage of the population. However, given the frequency at which surgical procedures occur, this means that a large number of people in the population may be affected. Post-discharge assessment and follow-up of at-risk patients is important, particularly where psychosocial elements such as anxiety and catastrophising are identified.

Lipid-lowering drugs and antihypertensive agents can be prescribed for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. In some cases, patients eligible for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease according to the European guidelines are not always started on preventive drugs. Existing research explores the attitudes of health professionals and patients towards cardiovascular preventive drugs but does not always differentiate between the attitudes towards drug initiation for primary or secondary prevention. We aim to systematically review qualitative studies assessing health professionals' and patients' attitudes and perceptions towards drug initiation for primary prevention of cardiovascular disease. ⋯ CRD42018095346.
