Comparative StudyComorbidity between depression and anxiety in patients with temporomandibular disorders according to the research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders.
To examine the extent of depression, anxiety, somatization, and comorbidity between depression and anxiety in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) by adding the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised self-report questionnaire for anxiety to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD. ⋯ Multidimensional assessment enabled differentiation between findings of depression, anxiety, somatization, and comorbidity in subgroups of TMD patients. The findings of no statistically significant differences between subgroups of TMD patients as to anxiety and comorbidity support previous studies on TMD and anxiety, which suggest a less significant role of anxiety in chronic TMD patients as compared to depression and somatization.

Comparative StudyAlterations in Masticatory Muscle Activation in People with Persistent Neck Pain Despite the Absence of Orofacial Pain or Temporomandibular Disorders.
To assess whether patients with persistent neck pain display evidence of altered masticatory muscle behavior during a jaw-clenching task, despite the absence of orofacial pain or temporomandibular disorders. ⋯ This study has provided novel evidence of altered motor control of the jaw in people with neck pain despite the absence of orofacial pain or temporomandibular disorders.

Temporomandibular Disorders in a Young Adolescent Brazilian Population: Epidemiologic Characterization and Associated Factors.
To carry out an epidemiologic characterization of the most common subtypes of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and to identify associated factors in a Brazilian sample of young adolescents. ⋯ About 25% of the adolescents evaluated presented painful TMD, and the majority of these comprised muscular and chronic cases. Some factors, such as reports of headache complaints, oral parafunctions, tooth grinding at night, and parents not living together, were associated with this condition among young Brazilian adolescents. Special attention should be given to these factors among adolescents with TMD.

Comparative StudyThe impact of cigarette smoking on sleep quality of patients with masticatory myofascial pain.
To evaluate the impact of cigarette smoking on the sleep quality of patients with masticatory myofascial pain and to determine whether the association between smoking and impaired sleep is influenced by other factors such as demographic, psychological, and behavioral variables. ⋯ Cigarette smoking is associated with numerous adverse health outcomes, including pain severity, alterations in mood, and disrupted sleep, and seems to be a significant predictor of sleep quality in patients with masticatory myofascial pain.

Effect of a Novel, Orally Active Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 and -9 Inhibitor in Spinal and Trigeminal Rat Models of Neuropathic Pain.
To study the effects of a novel matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and MMP-9 inhibitor, AQU-118, on mechanical allodynia in the spinal nerve ligation (SNL) model of neuropathic pain and the chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-IoN) model of neuropathic orofacial pain. ⋯ The results demonstrated that oral AQU-118 attenuates mechanical allodynia in both neuropathic pain models and with efficacies that mirror gabapentin at the 40 mg/kg dose used in the CCI-IoN model but without effect on basal sensitivity to mechanical stimulation/locomotive activity. These findings support a possible role for MMP-2/-9 in the etiology of neuropathic pain and also suggest that inhibition strategies represent a viable treatment option.
