Effect of berberine and bicyclol on Chinese patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: a retrospective study.
To compare the effect of berberine and bicyclol on patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ⋯ Berberine or bicyclol plus dietary modification and Tai Chi exercise could control NAFLD without serious adverse effects. Dietary modification and Tai Chi exercise alone for 4 months are insufficient for the management of NAFLD. It is possible to reduce body weight by administering berberine or bicyclol.

Low free triiodothyronine levels are associated with frail phenotype in hospitalized inpatients with cirrhosis.
Frailty is a prevalent complication predicting morbidity and mortality in cirrhosis. However, the association between thyroid hormone levels and frailty in cirrhotics remains elusive. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between thyroid hormone and frail phenotype in euthyroid patients with cirrhosis. ⋯ In our current study, FT3 < 3.03 pmol/L were significantly associated with increased risk for frailty. Measuring FT3, a readily available biomarker, may be useful for identifying frail phenotype in euthyroid patients with cirrhosis.

Evaluation of stillbirths and infant mortality before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: a retrospective study.
The maternal-child health services remain an important indicator to look at how different countries have handled the pandemic. This study aims to investigate the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal and child healthcare use and evaluate data on stillbirths and infant mortality. ⋯ In our study, it was determined that the variables of stillbirth and infant mortality during the COVID-19 pandemic period, and maternal and child health services in primary care and hospitals continued to provide services in a similar way to the pre-pandemic period. Compared to pre-pandemic periods during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was found that while the number of stillbirths was similar, there was a significant decrease in infant mortality.

Thiazide-associated hyponatremia in internal medicine patients: analysis of epidemiological and biochemical profiles.
Thiazide-associated hyponatremia (TAH) is a clinically important side effect of the therapy with thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics. This study aims to analyze epidemiological, biochemical, and symptomatological profiles (including volume status) of patients admitted with TAH. ⋯ Thiazide use is a crucial etiological cause of hypotonic hyponatremia among internal medicine inpatients, associated with more severe hyponatremia, but with no difference in the in-hospital mortality. Even in hypo-osmolar conditions of TAH, 32.9% of patients exhibited signs of volume depletion. FE-UA did not differ between the hypovolemic and the normovolemic patients in TAH conditions. Anorexia and the combination of thiazide together with furosemide, rather than thiazide use alone, were risk factors for hypovolemic hyponatremia without affecting FE-UA.

Effect of inadequate care on diabetes complications and healthcare resource utilization during management of type 2 diabetes in the United States.
To estimate the effects of inadequate type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) care on health outcomes, utilizing a model that incorporates patient, physician, and health-system factors. ⋯ Inadequate T2D care is an extensive issue that may have substantial economic burden and may lead to increased diabetes-related complications. Those who did not receive medications or laboratory tests that were consistent with ADA guidelines had significantly increased emergency healthcare utilization in the following year. These findings highlight the importance of careful monitoring of T2D.
