In my final theoretical block, I have to submit two 2,500- word assignments, a 2,000-word assignment, a 1,000-word CV/action plan and a 6,500-word portfolio, all to obtain a qualification that is unlikely to lead to employment. This article examines trends in sexually transmitted infections in the UK. Screening, treatment and education of adults and adolescents are discussed. Suggestions are made for improvements to sexual health, as outlined in The National Strategy for Sexual Health and HIV (Department of Health 2001).

This article provides a background to current practice in pre-operative assessment (POA) and outlines a POA lead nurse role that was successfully introduced in two acute hospital trusts. The education, training and assessment programme that was developed for POA nurses is also discussed. The aim of the programme was to offer an educational framework for nurses at different levels of practice in POA.
