Case Reports[Lactate acidosis in the course of status asthmaticus--case report].
A case report of lactate acidosis in the course of status asthmaticus in a 34 year old female is presented. The lactate acidosis was due to increased anaerobic glycolysis in respiratory muscles caused by decreased oxygen recruitment and increased oxygen consumption by respiratory muscles. The authors discuss the clinical significance of lactate acidosis and proper treatment of status asthmaticus.

Comparative Study[Incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in the Lódź province among persons in contact with tuberculotic patients].
The results of an analysis on new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis from contacts with sputum positive tuberculosis are discussed. In subjects with contacts with sputum positive tuberculosis the incidence rates were 16 fold higher in comparison with the general population. In patients that reported contacts with sputum negative tuberculosis the incidence rates were even higher. This contradiction can be explained by the quicker hospitalization in the first group of patients thus terminating contacts.

[Control of respiration in patients with respiratory insufficiency in chronic obstructive lung disease].
Twenty eight COPD patients with respiratory insufficiency were studied. These included: 12 hypoxemic and normocapnic patients, 16 hypoxemic and hypercapnic patients, and 22 healthy volunteers. ⋯ During hypercapnic stimulation using the rebreathing method the ventilatory response to CO2 in the COPD patients was lowered in comparison with the control. Increase of occlusion pressure as a response to the increasing hypercapnia was lowered in both groups, significantly in patients with hypercapnia.
