Comparative Study[Prediction of outcome of elderly patients with respiratory failure: comparison of current scoring systems].
To evaluate the predictive power of current scoring systems applied in elderly patients with respiratory failure. ⋯ All the four current scoring systems , i.e. APACHE II, APACHE III, SAPSII and Marshall score, presented satisfactory predictive power in prognosis of elderly patients with respiratory failure.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative Study[A comparison of bispectral index and sedation agitation scale in guiding sedation therapy: a randomized controlled study in patients undergoing short term mechanical ventilation].
To compare the value of bispectral index (BIS) monitoring and sedation agitation scale (SAS) in guiding intensive care unit (ICU) sedation therapy for the patients undergoing short term mechanical ventilation. ⋯ BIS monitoring is better in sedative control than SAS assessment for ICU patients undergoing short term mechanical ventilation.

Randomized Controlled Trial[Difference between single hole exhalation valve and plateau exhalation valve when used in patients treated with BiPAP Vision ventilator for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease with hypercapnia].
To observe difference in clinical effect between single hole exhalation valve and plateau exhalation valve when used in patients treated with BiPAP Vision ventilator for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with hypercapnia. ⋯ During BiPAP Vision ventilator in NIPPV treatment of patients with COPD complicated with CO2 retention , single hole exhalation valve and plateau exhalation valve both resulted in marked improvement in PaO2 and obvious decrease in PaCO2. Plateau exhalation valve corrected CO2 retention more quickly and effectively than side hole exhalation valve probably by preventing CO2 rebreathing by the patients.

Controlled Clinical Trial[The application of improved Glasgow coma scale score of 15 as switching point for invasive noninvasive mechanical ventilation in treatment of severe respiratory failure in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease].
To estimate the feasibility and the efficacy of early extubation and the sequential non invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) in severe respiratory failure of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) with the improved Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score of 15 as the switching point. ⋯ The application of improved GCS score of 15 as the switching point with 2 hours as window period for early extubation and non invasive nasal mask ventilation can significantly improve the therapeutic effect in patients with severe respiratory failure in COPD.

[Effect of inhalation of aerosolized unfractioned heparin on peri alveolar coagulability and inflammatory response in endotoxin induced acute lung injury rat model].
To observe the local changes in alveoli in intravenous endotoxin induced acute lung injury (ALI) rat model after inhalation of aerosolized unfractioned heparin (UFH), and to observe its effects on coagulability, fibrinolysis and inflammatory response. ⋯ It was proved that inhalation of aerosolized UFH resulted in lowering local coagulability, alleviating fibrinolytic depression, improving fibrinolysis , and attenuating inflammation in endotoxin induced ALI rat model. More prominent results will be obtained when it was use as a prophylactic measure. The optimal time of usage is 6 hours after endotoxin injection.
