This article describes the problem of firearm deaths among Canadians aged 15-24 years. It is based on data obtained from Statistics Canada, the Metropolitan Toronto Police Department, and the Canadian Department of Justice. ⋯ Some 23% of Canadian homes contain a firearm; the average number of firearms per home is 2.67. Medical and public health professionals are urged to work toward prevention by educating patients and families about the risks of a firearm in the home and by supporting legislation to decrease the availability of firearms to young people.

To determine the incidence of non-fatal firearm injuries in the Ottawa area, we retrospectively reviewed the charts of all children admitted to the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario for firearm injuries in the last 15 years. The Children's Hospital is the only pediatric tertiary care care centre in the Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec areas, serving a child population of 600,000. Eighteen children were admitted to our hospital for firearm injuries during this period; six suffered long-term disabilities. The low number of non-fatal firearm injuries at our institution reflects national trends in the incidence of fatal firearm injuries in Canadian children and adolescents.

The prevalence of smokeless tobacco and cigarette use among sixth, seventh and eighth grade students: a longitudinal investigation.
Few studies have reported on the prevalence of smokeless tobacco use among young children in Canada, although research conducted in the United States indicates a rising trend in smokeless tobacco use among school-aged children. We report on rates of smokeless tobacco experimentation and current use and its relationship to cigarette smoking in a large sample of students followed from Grade 6 through Grade 8 in Calgary, Canada. ⋯ In accordance with the American findings, however, both experimentation and current use of smokeless tobacco were more prevalent among males. Also, a high correspondence between smokeless tobacco and cigarette use was observed.
