Sensory motor cortex: correlation of presurgical mapping with functional MR imaging and invasive cortical mapping.
To describe a clinically useful application of functional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging--presurgical mapping of the sensory motor cortex--and to validate the results with established physiologic techniques. ⋯ Presurgical mapping of the sensory motor cortex is a potentially useful clinical application of functional MR imaging.

Bedside chest radiography is one of the most frequently performed radiologic examinations, yet it is the examination with the most variation in image quality. The need to improve the quality of this examination has long been recognized, but it is a difficult problem to solve. Critically ill patients must undergo bedside chest radiography almost daily. ⋯ When grids are used, the image quality is improved; acceptance has been slow, however, because the grid is frequently misaligned. Storage phosphor imaging/computed radiography with grids is a technology improvement that almost completely solves this problem. Radiologists should be sure to optimize the current techniques, as well as provide prompt examination reporting.

To evaluate the usefulness of transesophageal real-time ultrasound (US)-guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) in staging non-small cell lung carcinoma. ⋯ Real-time US-guided FNAB is useful in the preoperative staging of disease in selected patients with non-small cell lung cancer.

To illustrate the constellation of magnetic resonance (MR) findings that suggest prior patellar dislocation. ⋯ Hemarthrosis, medial patellar and lateral femoral contusion, and retinacular disruption suggest prior lateral patellar dislocation. Because of its sensitivity to subtle intraosseous signal abnormality, axial STIR imaging is a valuable adjunct in the evaluation of the acutely injured knee.

The authors evaluated the role of transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (US) in patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) and cerebrovascular disease. ⋯ Transcranial Doppler US scanning has great potential as an inexpensive, easily performed screening procedure for cerebrovascular disease in patients with SCD.
