Clinical Trial[Penetrating trauma of the neck: prospective study of 53 cases].
The treatment of penetrating injuries of the neck is still controversial nowadays, especially when there is doubt concerning the existence of any anatomic structure lesion. The delay to indicate surgical cervical exploration may predispose the patient to have serious sequels when the esophagus or the trachea are injured. The infection which may occur in this eventuality progresses rapidly to the mediastinum, determining the patient's death. ⋯ Trauma indexes correlated with patients' clinical evolution. 3. In cases when there was doubt about the effective presence of injuries, complementary digestive and respiratory evaluations were indicated. These exams contributed for reducing the rate of unnecessary surgical explorations.

[Mechanisms and evaluation of multiple organ and system failure after trauma].
Multiple organ failure (MOF) is a major cause of death of ICU trauma patients. Despite intensive clinical and experimental investigation, the exact physiopathology of this syndrome is unclear. ⋯ In this article the authors discuss recent results of this investigation. They present recently published criteria for MOF quantification, and focus on the mechanisms and mediators of MOF syndrome, emphasizing the role of sepsis, the intestinal ischemia/reperfusion MOF model, the role of polymorphonuclear neutrophil, and the relationship between adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and the development of MOF syndrome.

Case Reports[Hemifacial spasm: study using magnetic resonance angiography].
Nine patients with "idiopathic" hemifacial spasm were evaluated with cranial magnetic resonance imaging and angiography. Alterations of the posterior fossa vasculature, possibly related to the facial nerve irritation, were found in 8 patients (88%). Magnetic resonance angiography is a noninvasive procedure and appears to be a sensitive method to evaluate the hemifacial spasm etiology.

Case Reports[Poisoning caused by external use of iodoform].
A case of iodoform toxicity caused by use of 5% iodoformed bandage in occlusive surgical dressings for tamponing of diffuse hemorrhage in pelvic cavity, following amputation for treatment of rectum adenocarcinoma. Despite the frequent use of iodoformed dressings following surgical procedures, the signs and symptoms of iodoform toxicity syndrome can be easily mistook for other syndromes. A revision of the published observations suggest that this syndrome is not as rare as thought but probably has been underdiagnosed.

Case Reports[Lead poisoning caused by a bullet in the hip. Report of 2 cases].
Two cases of lead poisoning from retained bullets in the hip region are reported. General considerations about lead intoxication are made and the intoxication caused by bullets retained in the body are specifically focused.
