[Local Application of Tranexamic Acid in Total Hip Arthroplasty Decreases Blood Loss and Consumption of Blood Transfusion].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The primary aim of our study was to identify the effects of local application of tranexamic acid (TXA, Exacyl) on the amount of postoperative blood loss and blood transfusion requirement in primary total hip arthroplasty. We also recorded the levels of postoperative haemoglobin and its drop in early period after surgery. In each patient, we monitored in detail the incidence of early complications (haematoma, wound exudate). ⋯ No significant complications were observed in the patients with TXA. According to the recent literature, it is therefore appropriate to include the local application of TXA among the recommended procedures for THA, as is the case in total knee arthroplasty. Key words: tranexamic acid, local application, blood loss, hidden blood loss, THA, total hip arthroplasty, complications.

[Management of Odontoid Fractures with Compression Screw and Anterior Transarticular Screw Fixation in Elderly Patients].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY In the management of dens axis fractures in patients older than 65 years of age the posterior approach is preferred due to osteoporosis and the risk of a failure of anterior osteosynthesis. The posterior approach, however, is associated with a higher incidence of complications. A combination of anterior transarticular fixation of C1/2 (ATS) with compression osteosynthesis of dens axis significantly increases the stability of osteosynthesis. ⋯ The ATS fixation increases stability compared to isolated compression osteosynthesis, which makes it possible to manage the dens axis fractures by a more considerate anterior approach. CONCLUSIONS The ATS is a method that increases stability of compression osteosynthesis in managing dens axis in elderly patients. Key words: dens axis, upper cervical spine fracture, elderly, triple screw technique, anterior transarticular C1/2 stabilization.

Comparative StudyThe Impact of Caregivers' Anxiety on Patients' Anxiety before Fast-Track Knee Arthroplasty.
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Anxiety may have negative repercussions on the surgery including poorer outcomes. On the other hand, the majority of patients reporting preoperative anxiety fear not receiving enough attention from a caregiver. In patients undergoing fast-track knee arthroplasty, we determined the relationship between patients' preoperative anxiety and the anxiety the patient's caregiver. ⋯ The anxiety of unrelated caregivers is associated with low preoperative anxiety among patients. Preoperative interventions should focus on caregivers, especially male caregivers, and to related caregivers to help patients cope with anxiety before knee arthroplasty. Key words: knee arthroplasty. knee replacement. fast track, anxiety, caregiver, preoperative stress.

Randomized Controlled Trial[The Effect of Activation of the Shoulder Girdle Muscles on Functional Outcomes of Rehabilitation in Patients with Surgically Treated Distal Radius Fractures].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The aim of the study was to assess the functional outcomes of rehabilitation in patients with surgically treated distal radius fractures in the early postoperative period. We compared the functional outcomes of patients undergoing standard rehabilitation with the group of patients whose postoperative rehabilitation was extended with shoulder girdle exercises of the affected upper limb while the wrist was immobilized. Several indices and variables were used for the assessment of the functional therapeutic outcomes of the affected wrist. ⋯ CONCLUSIONS Shoulder girdle muscles exercises after a distal radius fracture, while wrist is immobilized, can evidently enhance functional capability and accelerate the hand-function restitution. Early functional outcomes of the injured wrist after the rehabilitation with shoulder girdle muscles exercises support the efficiency of this broadened rehabilitation protocol. Key words: distal radius frac, ture, hand, shoulder, functional treatment, rehabilitation.

[Clinical Results of Endoscopic Treatment of Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome].
PURPOSE OF THE STUDY This retrospective study aims to present short-term clinical outcomes of endoscopic treatment of patients with greater trochanteric pain syndrome (GTPS). MATERIAL AND METHODS The evaluated study population was composed of a total of 19 patients (16 women, 3 men) with the mean age of 47 years (19-63 years). In twelve cases the right hip joint was affected, in the remaining seven cases it was the left side. ⋯ In our study we succeeded in achieving similar clinical results as those achieved by the other authors engaged in this area. CONCLUSIONS It has been proven in this retrospective study that the technique of endoscopic trochanteric bursectomy in patients with greater trochanteric pain syndrome yields statistically significant improvement of clinical results with the concurrent minimum incidence of postoperative complications. Key words: greater trochanteric pain syndrome, peritrochanteric space, recalcitrant trochanteric bursitis, hip arthroscopy, endoscopic trochanteric bursectomy, iliotibial band release.
