Injuries of atlas account for 1-2% of all injures of the spine and for 7% of the injuries of the cervical spine. Fractures of atlas occur either as isolated fractures or in combination with the injury of the axis or occipital condyles. The aim of the work is to evaluate a group of patients with the injury of the atlas treated both conservatively and surgically. ⋯ Based on our own experience and the literary data we believe that suitable for the treatment of stable injuries of the atlas is conservative treatment, i.e. fixation in the Philadelphia collar for 12 weeks. In unstable injuries or intraarticular injures with dislocation we prefer surgical fixation of C1-C2 or C0-C2 in dependence on the type of injury. All associated injuries are indicated for surgical treatment.

[Treatment of calcaneal fractures using the medial approach for open reduction].
A comprehensive evaluation of the treatment of calcaneal fractures by open reduction is presented. The long-term results are compared with the relevant literature data. ⋯ Good outcomes of the treatment of intra-articular, dislocated calcaneal fractures depend on a correct shape and position of the dorsal articular surface of the calcaneus. The open reduction procedure from the medial approach based on the principles of McReynold's technique allowed us to accomplish both these criteria.

Review Case Reports[Traumatic spondylolisthesis of L5-S1].
Pure traumatic bilateral lumbosacral dislocation is a rare injury with just eight cases reported in the literature. This condition occurred also in 36-year-old man, who was struck into the lower back by a falling tree, during a woodcutting, at the moment when he was kneeling and his spine was flexed. Neurological examination showed no signs of spinal nerves injury. ⋯ At a 24-month follow-up he was without any subjective complaints, neurologically asymptomatic and without restriction of mobility in the lumbosacral spine. He was able to resume his previous work. This rare case is discussed in a view of the relevant literature, biomechanics of trauma and the appropriate therapy with an emphasis on open reduction and internal fixation techniques.

[Fracture-dislocations of the ankle joint in adults. Part I: epidemiologic evaluation of patients during a 1-year period].
The aim of the study is to present a basic statistical overview of fracture-dislocations of the ankle in adults in a one-year group of patients. ⋯ Fracture-dislocations affect equally men and women. Men prevail until the age of fifty, women afterwards. The average age of patients was 49 years. Most frequent is Weber B Type, least frequent Weber C.

[Mortality in patients with proximal femoral fractures during the first year after the injury].
The authors present an overview of mortality of patients with proximal femur fractures treated at the authors' Department in 1997 in dependence on different factors relating to the preinjury condition and the treatment itself. The aim of the work was to determine the impact of these factors on the risk of mortality and compare the findings with the data published by other authors dealing with the same issue. ⋯ Based on the evaluation of the data monitored in the group a conclusion was made that absolute mortality risk in the first year after the injury related to patients with pathological fractures due to metastasis. A higher risk related to male patients older than 80 years with the surgical risk of ASA IV and higher and this risk rate was the highest in the time interval within 3 months after the injury or operation.
