Review Case Reports
First trimester expression of anorectal malformation: Case report and review of the literature.
A 26-years-old woman, underwent an ultrasound examination at 13.4 weeks. A cystic structure was identified in the right lower abdomen. Gradually, the cystic mass was replaced by echogenic content and eventually attained the appearance of hyperechoic bowel. ⋯ Amniocentesis revealed 46XY karyotype with normal comparative genomic hybridization. After termination of pregnancy at 23 weeks, an autopsy revealed an isolated high type anorectal malformation (ARM) without fistula. We reviewed all 14 cases reported in the literature of first trimester sonographic expression of ARM.

Do emergency physicians rely on point-of-care ultrasound for clinical decision making without additional confirmatory testing?
It is unknown if Emergency Physicians (EPs) rely solely on Emergency Medicine performed Point-Of-Care Ultrasound (EM-POCUS) for clinical decision making or if they proceed to subsequent "gold standard" studies for confirmatory diagnosis. ⋯ This study describes the results of a survey on the use of EM-POCUS for clinical decision making by Ohio EPs. A majority of them continues to rely on gold standard testing for confirmatory diagnosis, in addition to EM-POCUS.

A retained urethral foreign body is an uncommon presentation in the Emergency Department. The diagnosis and treatment of retained urethral foreign bodies are determined by their size, location, shape, and mobility and often require specialty consultation and operative intervention. In this case of a 74-year-old man with a self-inserted, retained urethral foreign body, we present the utility of a bedside ultrasound to detect the depth, size, and distance from the meatus of the object to guide the approach to extraction of the object at the bedside in the Emergency Department. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Management of the critically ill patient requires rapid assessment and differentiation. Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) improves diagnostic accuracy and guides resuscitation. This study sought to describe the use of critical care related POCUS amongst different specialties. ⋯ Study respondents utilize POCUS in a variety of clinical applications. However, a disparity in utilization still exists among clinicians who care for critically ill patients. Overcoming barriers, such as a lack of formalized training, competency, or credentialing, may lead to increased utilization.

The aim of this study was to assess the potential clinical value of contrast enhanced laparoscopic ultrasonography (CE-LUS) as a screening modality for liver metastases during robotic assisted surgery for primary colorectal cancer (CRC). ⋯ CE-LUS did not increase the detection rate of occult liver metastasis during robotic assisted primary CRC surgery. The use of CE-LUS as a screening modality for detection of liver metastasis cannot be recommended based on this study, but larger controlled studies on high-risk patients seem relevant.
