Diagnosis and laparoscopic management of a rudimentary horn pregnancy: Role of three-dimensional ultrasound.
Rudimentary horn pregnancy occurs in 1 in 76,000-150,000 pregnancies and causes uterine rupture in about 80% of cases. The use of three-dimensional transvaginal ultrasound seems to be useful for its early detection. Patellar clunk syndrome is a painful mechanical phenomenon that may develop following total knee arthroplasty. The diagnosis is usually made clinically, but cross-sectional imaging may be needed to confirm the clinical suspicion. Sonographic confirmation of patellar clunk syndrome can be obtained by directly visualizing the soft tissue proliferation deep to the distal quadriceps tendon and by dynamically demonstrating the clunking tissue during flexion and extension of the knee. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. One day after pericardiocentesis for pericardial effusion in a patient with malignant breast cancer, the clinical and echocardiographic examination for recurrent dyspnea suggested stress cardiomyopathy with mid left ventricular ballooning and thrombus rather than pericardial decompression syndrome. Physicians should therefore pay attention to the possibility of ventricular dysfunction with thrombus post pericardiocentesis and to differences between stress cardiomyopathy and pericardial decompression syndrome. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Our current clinical technique for sonographic-guided perineural injection consists of two-sided perineural needle placement to obtain circumferential distribution of the injectate. This study aimed to determine if a single-side needle position will produce circumferential nerve coverage. ⋯ Using clinical volumes of fluid, needle positioning at the deep surface of upper extremity and sciatic nerves was sufficient to produce circumferential coating of the nerve, except in the carpal tunnel, where placement of the needle between the nerve and flexor retinaculum is recommended. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Sonography of the chest using linear-array versus sector transducers: Correlation with auscultation, chest radiography, and computed tomography.
The primary purpose of our study was to compare the efficacies of two sonographic (US) probes, a high-frequency linear-array probe and a lower-frequency phased-array sector probe in the diagnosis of basic thoracic pathologies. The secondary purpose was to compare the diagnostic performance of thoracic US with auscultation and chest radiography (CXR) using thoracic CT as a gold standard. ⋯ The linear probe is superior to the sector probe for identifying pleural pathologies, whereas the sector probe is superior to the linear probe for identifying parenchymal pathologies. Thoracic US has better diagnostic performance than CXR and auscultation for the diagnosis of common pathologic conditions of the chest. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
