Promotion of emotional wellbeing in oncology inpatients using VR.
In Psycho-oncology, VR has been utilized mainly to manage pain and distress associated to medical procedures and chemotherapy, with very few applications aimed at promotion of wellbeing in hospitalized patients. Considering this, it was implemented a psychological intervention that uses VR to induce positive emotions on adult oncology inpatients with the purpose of evaluating its utility to improve emotional wellbeing in this population. ⋯ Results emphasize the potential of VR as a positive technology that can be used to promote wellbeing during hospitalization, especially considering the shortness of the intervention and the advanced state of disease of the participants. Despite the encouraging of these results, it is necessary to confirm them in studies with larger samples and control groups.

Comparative StudyPerformance comparison of laryngoscopy and suction techniques in a hemorrhagic airway manikin simulator: direct laryngoscopy with Yankauer vs. Storz CMAC with attached suction tip.
Airway management of the hemorrhagic airway can be a difficult skill to master as trainee exposure to this difficult airway may be limited. In this study, we employed a hemorrhagic airway simulator along with a videolaryngoscope and the Storz Boedker-Doerges (BD) suction blade. These devices provided improved intubation performance in this model with respect to traditional direct laryngoscope (DL) and VL blades. This study shows that use of a hemorrhagic simulator could be an effective and valuable training tool in difficult airway intubation training.

Automated encoding of free-text clinical narratives using concepts from terminological systems is widely performed. However, the majority of natural language processing (NLP) tools and terminological systems involve the English language. As parts of the NLP process are language independent, and tools for various languages are available, an overview is needed to determine the applicability to performing NLP of Dutch medical texts. ⋯ Most of them are suitable for English free text, some of them are (also) usable for Dutch. To enable automated encoding of Dutch free text narratives, further research is needed to create a spelling checker, a negation detector, a domain-specific abbreviation/acronym list, and a concept mapper (to map Dutch terms to concepts in a terminological system). Furthermore evaluation of performance for the Dutch 'medical' language is needed.

Evidence based electronic system to ensure quality of care in trauma patients.
Electronic patient records are important for quality health services. Aim of this study is to support the trauma patient care with the development of an electronic system. A survey was conducted in the Emergency Department (ED) of a University hospital to study the effectiveness of an electronic monitoring system in a group of trauma patients, as well as the acceptance of this electronic system by the health professionals of the ED. ⋯ The severity, length of care and the health outcomes of 200 trauma patients, were investigated. Half of the patients (N=100) have been monitored by the electronic system and the other 100 were monitored without the use of the system. The time between the admission and completion of the planned care was significantly lower in the electronic monitoring patient group (100±92 minutes) compared to the control group (149±29 minutes).

Analysis of body growth parameters in girls with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: single thoracic idiopathic scoliosis versus single lumbar idiopathic scoliosis.
Abnormal pattern of growth has been reported in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients. However, the sequential changes of growth in different curve types of AIS have not been properly studied. The present study aimed to investigate the body growth characteristics of girls with single thoracic idiopathic scoliosis and lumbar idiopathic scoliosis in China. 339 AIS girls and 3914 healthy girls, aged 10~17yr, were included. ⋯ The standing and sitting height between thoracic and lumbar AIS girls were similar during the pubertal period. Compared to healthy girls at the same age, thoracic and lumbar AIS girls had a significantly higher corrected standing, sitting height and leg length. In addition, thoracic AIS girls are leaner than healthy girls.
