ReviewEthical aspects of using medical social media in healthcare applications.
The advances in internet and mobile technologies and their increased use in healthcare led to the development of a new research field: health web science. Many research questions are addressed in that field, starting from analysing social-media data, to recruiting participants for clinical studies and monitoring the public health status. ⋯ Through a literature review, the current awareness on ethical issues in the context of public health monitoring and research using medical social media data is determined. Further, considerations on the topic were collected from members of the IMIA Social Media Working group.

Hospital nurses' and physicians' use of information sources during their production of discharge summaries: a cross-sectional study.
Hospital nurses' and physicians' production and exchange of accurate information between levels of care are crucial for ensuring safe and seamless care for patients in transition. We report on a study in which we explored hospital providers' use of information sources when they prepared discharge information for colleges in the community health-care sector. In this cross-sectional study, 510 nurses and 236 physicians responded through a questionnaire. Our findings show that nurses and physicians use different information sources in patient records when they produce their discharge summaries.

In the daily routine of hospitals, which work with paper based medical records, the staff has to find the appropriate patient file if it needs information about the patient. With the introduction of ELGA the Austrian hospitals have to use specific standards for their clinical documentation. These structured documents can be used to feed an e-Ink reader with information about every patient in a hospital. ⋯ The developed experimental setup of the Bedside Patient Data Viewer demonstrates a prototype of such a system. An Amazon Kindle Paperwhite is used to display processed data, supplied by a Raspberry Pi with an attached RFID module for identification purposes. Results show that such a system can be implemented, however a lot of organizational and technical issues remain to be solved.

The pHealth 2014 Conference is the 11th in a series of scientific events bringing together expertise from medical, technological, political, administrative, and social domains, all related to the provision of personalized health services. Aspects such as cooperation between primary, secondary and tertiary health care establishments, the inclusion of social care, home care and lifestyle management, practical experiences with local or regional telemedicine services, management of chronic diseases, Quality assurance challenges, health games, terminologies and ontologies, data management and visualizations, medical decision support, monitoring of environmental and living conditions of citizens using mobile wearable or implementable technologies as well as social and ethical issues of health (care) provision are to be addressed by almost 40 speakers from various parts of the world. Keynotes, invited talks, and oral presentations discuss foundations and principles, requirements and solutions for pHealth. ⋯ The editors are also grateful to the dedicated efforts of the Local Organizing Committee members and their supporters for carefully and smoothly preparing and operating of the conference. They especially thank all team members of the eHealth Research and the management of the University of Applied Sciences Technikum Wien for their continuous involvement in the organization and realization of the conference. A service oriented approach for guidelines-based clinical decision support using BPMN.
Evidence-based medical practice requires that clinical guidelines need to be documented in such a way that they represent a clinical workflow in its most accessible form. In order to optimize clinical processes to improve clinical outcomes, we propose a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) based approach for implementing clinical guidelines that can be accessed from an Electronic Health Record (EHR) application with a Web Services enabled communication mechanism with the Enterprise Service Bus. ⋯ The aim of this study is to produce spontaneous alerts in the healthcare workflow in the diagnosis of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The use of BPMN as a tool to automate clinical guidelines has not been previously employed for providing Clinical Decision Support (CDS).
