Application of a depression management office system in community practice: a demonstration.
Recent studies provide new insights about strategies that improve depression outcomes. We explored the feasibility of implementing these strategies in community practices. ⋯ Application of the office system was feasible in this demonstration project. If results are confirmed in further studies, this approach will be appropriate for widespread application.

Improving firearm storage habits: impact of brief office counseling by family physicians.
Firearm injury is the leading cause of injury-related death among youth and second leading cause of injury-related death overall in the United States. Our objective is to determine the impact of brief office counseling by family physicians on patients' firearm storage habits. ⋯ Family physicians' brief counseling efforts made a significant positive impact in the firearm storage habits of their patients. With a verbal or written recommendation, a significant improvement was observed in firearm storage.

Epidural analgesia and severe perineal laceration in a community-based obstetric practice.
This study assessed whether epidural analgesia was an independent risk factor for severe perineal laceration. ⋯ Epidural analgesia is associated with an increase in severe perineal trauma as a result of an associated threefold increased risk of instrument use. Instrument use in vaginal delivery more than triples the risk of severe perineal laceration.

Characteristics of visits to licensed acupuncturists, chiropractors, massage therapists, and naturopathic physicians.
Despite growing popularity of complementary and alternative medical (CAM) therapies, little is known about the patients seen by CAM practitioners. Our objective was to describe the patients and problems seen by CAM practitioners. ⋯ This information will help inform discussions of the roles CAM practitioners will play in the health care system of the future.
