The intraparietal sulcus (IPS) in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) is well-known as an interface for sensorimotor integration in visually guided actions. However, our understanding of the human neural network between the IPS and the cortical visual areas has been devoid of anatomical specificity. We here identified a distinctive association fiber tract "IPS-FG" to connect the IPS areas and the fusiform gyrus (FG), a high-level visual region, by white matter dissection and tractography. ⋯ We then analyzed the structural connectivity of this tract with diffusion-MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) tractography. The quantitative tractography analysis revealed the major streamlines of IPS-FG interconnect the posterior IPS areas (e.g., IP1, IPS1) with FG (e.g., TF, FFC, VVC, PHA2, PIT) on the Human Connectome Project multimodal parcellation atlas (HCP MMP 1.0). Since the fronto-parietal network, including the posterior IPS areas, is recruited by multiple cognitive demands, the IPS-FG could play a role in the visuomotor integration as well as the top-down modulation of various cognitive functions reciprocally.

Treatment of non-erosive reflux disease and dynamics of the esophageal microbiome: a prospective multicenter study.
Non-erosive reflux disease (NERD) pathogenesis has not been thoroughly evaluated. Here, we assessed the response of patients with NERD to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) therapy; changes in the microbiome and biologic marker expression in the esophageal mucosa were also evaluated. Patients with NERD (n = 55) received esomeprazole (20 mg) for eight weeks. ⋯ The expression of several inflammatory cytokines was reduced in the esophagus, and oropharyngeal and esophageal microbiomes in patients with NERD showed significant difference. However, the microbial compositions in the oropharynx and esophagus were not affected by PPI therapy in this study. Impact of PPI on the microbiome in patients with NERD should be more investigated in future studies.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an important and urgent threat to global health. Inflammation factors are important for COVID-19 mortality, and we aim to explore whether the baseline levels of procalcitonin (PCT), C-reaction protein (CRP) and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are associated with an increased risk of mortality in patients with COVID-19. A retrospective study was conducted and a total of 76 patients with confirmed COVID-19 were included between January 17, 2020 to March 2, 2020, of these cases, 17 patients were dead. ⋯ However, NRL (≥ 3.59) was not found to be an independent risk factor for death in our study. Furthermore, the elevated PCT levels were still associated with increasing risk of mortality in the old age group (age ≥ 60 y), and in the critically severe and severe patients after adjustment for complications. Thu Baseline levels of PCT and CRP have been addressed as independent predictors of mortality in patients with COVID-19.
