Hemoglobin measured by Hemocue and a reference method in venous and capillary blood: a validation study.
To assess the comparability of hemoglobin concentration (Hb) in venous and capillary blood measured by Hemocue and an automated spectrophotometer (Celldyn) and to document the influence of type of blood (capillary or venous) and analysis method on anemia prevalence estimates. ⋯ The difference in Hb between venous and capillary blood is likely related to biological variability. Hemoglobin concentration in capillary blood assessed by Hemocue provides an adequate estimation of population anemia prevalence but may result in excess false negative diagnoses among individuals. The results of this study stress the importance of sample collection technique, particularly for children. Method of analysis and sampling site need to be taken into consideration in field studies. Comparative Study[Incidence of nosocomial bacteremia and pneumonia in pediatric unit].
To determine the incidence of catheter-related bacteremia and ventilator-associated pneumonia in children admitted to a secondary care hospital. ⋯ The most striking finding of this study was the higher incidence of these two nosocomial infections in children, as compared to that reported elsewhere. These findings call for preventive strategies and guidelines for handling intravenous catheters and mechanical ventilation in Mexico.

Historical Article[Mystic, science, and politics in the development of health systems. The experience of Chile].
The combination of inspiration, science, and politics is a cornerstone precept for the common good of humanity, towards the fulfillment of social objectives. Based on this precept, this paper reviews core experiences of the Chilean Health Sector. Health sector key events taking place during the first half of the 20th century were the creation of the National Health Service and the development of mother and child healthcare policies. ⋯ In 1951 the reform was approved, to extend coverage to blue collar workers and their families; separate health provision from healthcare security; emphasize preventive pediatric care in mother's health, and reproductive health. The basic tenets of healthcare reform were the right to health, solidarity, and equity, as the pillars of policy-making and healthcare programming. The question of whether the evolution of social security in Chile has been consistent with the original healthcare reform tenets is raised by the author.

[Effects of air pollution on daily mortality in the city of Zaragoza, Spain, 1991-1995].
To analyze the short-term impact of air pollution on daily mortality in the City of Zaragoza (Spain). ⋯ Low levels of air pollution were found in Zaragoza, with considerable variation in the concentration of air pollutant concentrations and daily respiratory and cardiovascular deaths, particularly during the warm season.
