Randomized Controlled TrialEfficacy of intravenous tramadol in the control of shivering following spinal anaesthesia for caesarean section.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of intravenous tramadol in control of shivering in obstetric patients under spinal anaesthesia and to determine the minimal dose of tramadol that is effective. ⋯ Tramadol is effective in control of shivering during spinal anaesthesia in obstetric patients. Tramadol 0.5 mg/kg controlled shivering better than 0.25 mg/kg. Therefore, 0.5 mg/kg of tramadol can be used to manage shivering following caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia.

Prolonged intensive care unit stay after coronary artery bypass graft surgery: Role of perioperative factors.
Long stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery has been found to result in increased hospital mortality, poor long-term prognosis, prolonged hospital stay, and consequently, high cost and expenses. We, therefore, reviewed CABG surgery performed at the Madras Medical Mission Chennai, India, during a 3-month period to determine perioperative factors that are significant predictors of prolonged ICU admission. ⋯ This review showed LV support with inotrope as the only independent predictor of prolonged ICU stay after CABG surgery. Therefore, an excellent perioperative care leading to a reduced requirement for LV support after cardiopulmonary bypass for CABG surgery should be the goal.

Impact of basic life support training on the knowledge of basic life support in a group of Nigerian Dental Students.
Aim and Objetive: The burden of cardiac arrest remains enormous globally. Early recognition and prompt and effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation are crucial to successful outcome following a cardiac arrest. This study assessed the impact of basic life support (BLS) training on the knowledge of a group of dental students. ⋯ The results of this study suggest that the group of dental students' knowledge of BLS was very poor prior to the BLS training. The study also showed that the BLS training had a positive influence on the BLS knowledge of the participants.

Case ReportsUreterovaginal fistula resulting from uterine dilatation and curettage for an incomplete abortion: a case report.
This is to highlight the case of a multi-gravida who developed ureterovaginal urinary fistula following dilatation and curettage. It is necessary to document the possibility of this injury from the common procedure of D&C. ⋯ Dilatation and curettage though a common procedure is subject to complications which may make life of the patient miserable especially in this sub region, therefore should be carried out by only trained and skilled hands.

Relevance of fibrinolytic protein (D-dimer) and fibrinopeptide A as markers of sickle cell anaemia vaso-occlusive crisis.
To determine the plasma concentration of fibrinolytic protein (D-dimer) and Fibrinopeptide A(FPA) in sickle cell anaemia (SCA) patients in steady state and vaso-occlusive crisis(VOC) for the purpose of determining their clinical value in assessing/or predicting the onset of VOC Subjects and Methods: A total of 25 (14 Males: 11Females) HbSS subjects in VOC , 24 (13M:11F) HbSS subjects in steady state between the ages of 10-40 years old and 30 (17M:13F) healthy HbAA volunteers, of the same age and sex with the subjects were recruited for the study. Haematological parameters{Haemoglobin (Hb), Haematocrit(HCT), White blood cell count(WBC) and Platelets(Plt)}, prothrombin time(PT), activated partial thromboplastin time(APTT), plasma concentrations of D-dimer and FPA were determined. ⋯ Fibrinolysis is not significantly increased in SCA either in the steady state or during VOC. Fibrinopeptide A assay appears to be of value in the assessment of VOC in sickle cell anaemia.
