Ultrasonic evaluation of orbito-ocular trauma in Benin-City, Nigeria.
To find out the causes, time of presentation for ultrasound scan, pattern of eye injuries and orbital ultrasound findings in patients with orbito-ocular trauma. ⋯ Ultrasound scan is a useful imaging modality for examination of the globe in patients with ocular trauma. Road traffic accident is the commonest cause of traumatic ocular injury affecting the globe. Retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage are the most frequent injuries to the globe diagnosed by ultrasound scan. Measures to reduce road traffic accidents will have far reaching positive effect in preventing blindness resulting from orbito-ocular trauma in Nigeria.

Comparative StudyIntraocular pressure changes in a Nigerian population--effects of tracheal tube and laryngeal mask airway insertion and removal.
Laryngoscopy and tracheal intubation lead to acute elevation in intraocular pressure (IOP); the ocular hypertensive response. The Laryngeal mask airway prevents sudden surges in IOP. We compared IOP changes to the insertion and removal of the Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) and the endotracheal tube (ETT). ⋯ The LMA produced better IOP stability following its insertion and removal compared to the tracheal tube.

Complications and indications for intensive care unit admission after thyroidectomy in a University Teaching Hospital.
Routine admission of all post-thyroidectomy patients into intensive care unit (ICU) within the first 24-48 hours is advocated and practised in some hospitals. However, clinicians today are faced with the need to improve patient outcome at minimal costs. ⋯ It is safe to discharge the majority of patients back to post-surgical ward for nursing care immediately after thyroidectomy. Most of our patients were discharged to the post-surgical ward without any life-threatening complication.

Multicenter Study Clinical TrialPupillary changes among Nigerian adults following the instillation of Garcinia kola nut extracts: multicentric studies.
A multi-centre, open, within-patient controlled study was performed on 106 adult volunteers to investigate the effects of Garcinia kolanut extracts on the pupillary sizes. ⋯ 4% Garcinia kola nut extract drop has a transient miotic effect on human pupils not sustainable for more than 45 minutes.

Severe burn trauma from deliberate self-harm: the Sokoto experience.
Burn injury is one of the most severe forms of trauma that can afflict mankind. Although several forms of suicide and para suicide have been reported worldwide, severe burn injuries from deliberate self-harm have been poorly documented in Africa. ⋯ Severe burn injury from DSH, although previously poorly documented in Africa, is not uncommon in our environment. The morbidity and mortality are high, not only because of the nature of injury, but probably because of poor compliance to treatment. We advocate community based studies and routine screening of adolescents to identify those at risk. The need for the establishment suicide information, intervention and prevention centre in Nigeria cannot be overemphasised.
