Managing procedural pain in a child involves multiple factors, including how to evaluate the pain. This process is more difficult with children because of differences in cognitive and physical development. A multidimensional model for the assessment of pain in a pediatric burn patient is presented along with recommendations based on various levels of development.

The nurse caring for a child with burn wounds has multiple options to help relieve the pain associated with such care. Pharmacologic interventions are important, but they are not the only methods that can be successful. The nurse can use knowledge of the child's physical and cognitive developmental levels to promote pain relief and give the child a sense of control over the care provided.

The Jacksonville Pediatric Injury Control System is a multidisciplinary forum created to identify, discuss, and recommend actions that improve the care of pediatric trauma patients in the Jacksonville, Florida, area. Daily events that affect the outcome of injured children are measured. ⋯ To improve our ability to treat pediatric injury, factors that undermine this efficiency must be controlled. The Jacksonville Pediatric Injury Control System accomplishes this in a manner that uses existing resources to focus the pursuit of excellence for an entire community of professionals committed to improved care for the injured child.
