The study has evaluated the subjective pain treatment perception in hospitalized patients with an observational cross-sectional design, using a measurement model based on the American Pain Society-Pain Outcome Modified-Questionnaire (APS-POQ-M). The survey has been designed accordingly with other published studies for results comparison. Data were collected from 350 hospitalized patients - with diagnoses highly related to pain - in 46 medical-surgical units in a large university hospital. ⋯ The worst pain over the last 24 hours scored 6.8 where the 24-hours average pain was 4.9. The patients surveyed reported interference caused by pain in the daily activity, however, they were also generally satisfied with the ongoing pain control treatment. Statistically significant relationships have been found between level of satisfaction with treatment and mood and relationships but none with pain.

Comparative Study
[Central venous catheter related infections: comparison of polyurethane film and gauze/tape dressing].
Central venous catheters (CVCs) are widely used in clinical practice; catheter related infection is the most important cause of sepsis in surgical patients. In the present study, we compared the effect of two different dressings in CVCs related infections and evaluated microorganisms involved. We studied 124 CVCs inserted patients. ⋯ Duration of catheterization was 5,27 SD 1,76 days in group A and 11,30 SD 5,84 days in group B. Statistical analysis showed a significant lower infection rate in tape/gauze dressings while polyurethane film dressings seemed to predispose to infections. For the statistic analysis we have used z statistic test and the contingency analysis charts.

Randomized Controlled Trial
[Effectiveness of IPD treatment for delirium prevention in hospitalized elderly. A controlled randomized clinical trial].
Delirium is a common and serious complication for hospitalized elderly people. Early detection of risk and preventive treatment may significantly reduce delirium and its consequences. In Inouye's study of elderly people with delirium (1993), an interesting predictive model was proposed ,but never applied, for hospitalized elderly. ⋯ The method of assessment was the Confusion Assessment protocol. There was a statistically and clinically significant reduction in both the risk of delirium and related events in the treatment group compared to the control. Therefore, the IPD model proved to be highly effective in comparison to traditional care for elderly inpatients.

Randomized Controlled Trial
[Nursing interventions for the prevention of the delirium in intensive care unit (ICU): a randomized study].
The delirium is a common and problematic condition that involves between 10% and 50% of the in-patients. The in-patients in intensive care unit (ICU) are more at risk (about 38%). These data are not realistic because delirium is a condition that can be either unrecognized or misdiagnosed; between 66% and 84% of delirium in elderly hospitalized patients is unrecognized by clinicians. The aim of this study is to verify if nurses activities directed to the patient and environment, for maintaining time-space orientation and cognitive functions, can diminish or slow down the increase of delirium. The sample of this study is made up of 48 patients; using randomize technique 31 patients were assigned to the control group and 17 to the experimental group. ⋯ The results of this study demonstrate that the nurses' activities can have an important role in order to assess, diminish and slow down the increase of delirium.

Several not conventional medicine treatments aspirate to legislative acknowledgments of full integration in the health system. On the other hand, registered drugs not always produce the promised effects and, often, constitute an additional cause of dead. ⋯ More particularly, as in the last years, the planning of the clinical trials underwent substantial changes, mostly for economic reasons, it examines the differences among superiority, equivalence and not inferiority studies highlighting the different logic. As general consideration, the former kind of study is to be preferred while the other two can be accepted only when the equivalence margin is very close.
