Multicenter StudyPrevalence and risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in 17 152 patients from the island of Funen, Denmark.
This study aims to estimate the prevalence and risk factors of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients enrolled in a large Danish quality-assuring database for diabetes: the Funen Diabetes Database (FDDB). ⋯ The patients in FDDB had good systemic control with median values of BP, serum lipids, cholesterol and HbA1c all close to or below national guidelines at the time of data extraction, but still a high level of DR was found in this cohort. DR was more common in patients with T1DM than T2DM, but as T2DM patients are more numerous, their level of DR despite acceptable control is still concerning. Most important associated factors for higher levels of DR were age, duration of diabetes, HbA1c, s-creatinine and u-albumine.

Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) is a potential biomarker of angiogenesis in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.
Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) promotes angiogenesis through matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) production. We investigated the expression levels of EMMPRIN and correlated these levels with VEGF, MMP-1 and MMP-9 in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). In addition, we examined the expression of EMMPRIN in the retinas of diabetic rats and the effect of EMMPRIN on the induction of angiogenesis regulatory factors in human retinal microvascular endothelial cells (HRMECs). ⋯ These results suggest that EMMPRIN/MMPs/VEGF pathway is involved in PDR angiogenesis.

Thickness of macular inner retinal layers and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer in neuromyelitis optica spectrum optic neuritis and isolated optic neuritis with one episode.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences between macular inner retinal layers and peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (pRNFL) thickness in Chinese patients with neuromyelitis spectrum optic neuritis (NMOSD-ON) and isolated optic neuritis (ION) with only one episode. ⋯ Neuromyelitis spectrum optic neuritis (NMOSD-ON) patients had more pRNFL and mRNFL loss compared to ION patients after one episode. Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) may help to distinguish NMOSD-ON from ION with only moderate diagnostic accuracy.

High-resolution transbulbar ultrasonography helping differentiate intracranial hypertension in bilateral optic disc oedema patients.
The enlargement of optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) has been proven to be related with raised intracranial pressure (ICP). No prospective study has been focused on utilizing retrobulbar ultrasonography in optic disc oedema patient presented to ophthalmologist. ⋯ The enlarged SAS and ONSD measured by high-resolution transbulbar sonography are very sensitive parameters to predicate increased ICP in bilateral optic disc oedema patients.

Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of patients hospitalized for ocular trauma in South-Central China.
Ocular trauma is a major cause of visual loss, but little is known about its epidemiology and clinical characteristics in China. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of ocular trauma and assess prognostic factors in Changsha, Hunan, located in South-Central China. ⋯ This study describes the epidemiology and clinical characteristics of patients hospitalized for ocular trauma in South-Central China. Notably, a high rate of firework-related ocular trauma occurred during the months adjacent to the Chinese New Year festival. Specific injury prevention strategies, such as the use of protective eyewear, need to target the workplace to reduce the incidence and severity of ocular trauma.
