Increased risk of erectile dysfunction among males with central serous chorioretinopathy -- a retrospective cohort study.
Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR) mostly affects middle-aged men and has been associated with stress and hypercortisolism. We hypothesized that some factors prone to inducing CSCR could also have a harmful effect on erectile function. This study aimed to investigate the risk of subsequent erectile dysfunction after CSCR using Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. ⋯ Central serous chorioretinopathy was independently associated with an increased risk of being diagnosed with erectile dysfunction.

Gene polymorphisms of the MMP1, MMP9, MMP12, IL-1β and TIMP1 and the risk of primary open-angle glaucoma.
Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is the main cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and their regulators (TIMPs and ILs) have been extensively studied as POAG risk factors. Recent reports have showed several single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for MMPs, TIMPs and ILs encoding genes in patients with POAG. The aim of this study was to investigate association of the -1607 1G/2G MMP1, -the 1562 C/T MMP9, the -82 A/G MMP12, the -511 C/T IL-1β and the 372 T/C TIMP1 gene polymorphisms with POAG occurrence and to investigate their impact on main clinical features. ⋯ In conclusion, we suggest that the -1607 1G/2G MMP1, -1562 C/T MMP9, -511 C/T IL-1β gene polymorphisms can be considered as an important risk factors associated with POAG.

Can we measure the intraocular pressure when the eyeball is against the pillow in the lateral decubitus position?
To evaluate the amount of intraocular pressure (IOP) change in the eye against the pillow in the lateral decubitus position (LDP). ⋯ The IOP was significantly elevated when the eyeball was against the pillow in the LDP.

Ang-2 upregulation correlates with increased levels of MMP-9, VEGF, EPO and TGFβ1 in diabetic eyes undergoing vitrectomy.
Angiogenesis in diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a multifactorial process regulated by hypoxia-induced growth factors and inflammatory cytokines. In addition to the angiogenic switch, the proteolytic processing and altered synthesis of the extracellular matrix are critical steps in this disease. This study was performed to evaluate the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-2 and MMP-9), angiopoietin-1 and angiopoietin-2 (Ang-1 and Ang-2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), erythropoietin (EPO) and transforming growth factor-β1 (totalTGFβ1) in the vitreous of diabetic eyes undergoing vitrectomy compared with control eyes operated because of macular hole or pucker. ⋯ The main new finding is that the intravitreal concentrations of Ang-2 correlated significantly with MMP-9, VEGF, EPO and TGFβ1 levels in diabetic eyes undergoing vitrectomy. Thus, these factors could promote retinal angiogenesis synergistically.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and mantle cell lymphoma of the ocular adnexal region, and lymphoma of the lacrimal gland: an investigation of clinical and histopathological features.
Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) constitute two distinct subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. Marked diversities with regard to molecular biology and clinical features are recognized in different subsets of the two lymphomas. Because these differences could be related to the location of the lymphoma, it is of interest to investigate the clinical and histopathological features of DLBCL and MCL involving the ocular adnexal region (i.e. the orbit, eyelids, conjunctiva, lacrimal gland and lacrimal sac). Similarly, the lacrimal gland is the only glandular structure within the orbit. Because the lacrimal gland represents an important part of the immunological system, it is of interest to investigate lymphomas involving this location with regard to clinical and histological characteristics. ⋯ Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and MCL involving the ocular adnexal region and lymphoma of the lacrimal gland are prevalent among elderly patients. The overall prognosis in DLBCL and MCL was poor, whereas the prognosis for lacrimal gland lymphoma patients was relatively good. Concordant bone marrow involvement and the International Prognostic Index score were independent predictive factors for mortality in the DLBCL group. Chemotherapy containing rituximab significantly improved survival in the MCL group.
