THE DIAGNOSIS OF DEPRESSION: Depressive disorder is nowadays diagnosed by the two widely used diagnostic systems--International Classification of Diseases of the World Health Organisation, 10th revision and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Criteria of the American Psychiatric Organisation, 4th edition. The criteria for depressive disorder used in these two systems are almost identical. ⋯ It appears that no new diagnostic tools specific for major depression in stroke patients are necessary. The existing diagnostic procedures will fail to diagnose or misdiagnose depression only in few stroke patients.

The entity of sudden cardiac death in young athletes has been known since the year 490 B. C. when young Greek soldier Phidipides had run the distance from Marathon to Athens and suddenly fell down dead. In the last twenty years, sudden death of famous athletes have attracted huge attention of medical and social community; afterwards both American and European Cardiology Societies started to publish periodically guidelines for preparticipation screening. ⋯ Unrecognized congenital cardiovascular abnormalities associated with excessive physical effort create background for electrophysiological instability and occurrence of malignant ventricular tachyarrhythmia and consequent death. The most frequent causes of sudden cardiac death in young athletes include hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, anomalies of the coronary arteries and idiopathic left ventricular hypertrophy. Current ACC/AHA & ESC guidelines should be widely used in order to reduce potential sudden cardiac death in young athletes.

[Portrait of Dr Milenko Petrović (1884-1950)].
Dr Milenko Petrović was one of the very distinguished physicians in the history of Sombor city, who significantly contributed to the development of health care in Voivodina. His father Dimitrije was a professor in the High Teacher-training School in Sombor, recognized writer and politician of his epoch. He was born in Sombor in 1884, where he was educated and finished grammar school. ⋯ Since 1930 he worked as a professor of Hygiene in the High Teacher-training School, just like his father. He was arrested and persecuted not only during the Seecond World War, but after the war as well by communist authorities, because he was regarded as nationalist, monarchist, and anticommunist. He died unrecognized in 1950, and now finally came the time for objective evaluation and recognition of his valuable professsional work.

Polytrauma remains a major social, economic and medicine affliction. A successful surgical treatment of polytrauma patients requires an approach predicated on prioritizing injuries. An isolated femur fractures rarely poses any threat but in association with multiple injuries, this fracture assumes greater significance. The proper management of femur fractures in polytrauma can greatly reduce the mortality and morbidity. ⋯ The external fixation by the use of Mitkovic external fixator in the treatment of femur fractures is a safe procedure to achieve temporary rigid stabilisation in polytrauma patients before the subsequent internal fixation (damage control orthopaedics). The external fixation using Mitkovic external fixator can be definitive method of choice in treatment of open and comminutive femur fractures in polytrauma patients until union.
