Case ReportsUnusual management of thoracoabdominal impalement injury to the right hemiliver and diaphragm.
Laparotomy or thoracolaparotomy is a traditional management approach for thoracoabdominal impalement injury associated with major liver and diaphragmatic injuries. We successfully treated the impalement injury with minimally invasive management. A male was brought to our trauma centre with the 15 cm long handle of the knife protruded from right lateral thoracoabdominal region. ⋯ The conservative management plan consisting of removing the impaled knife, observing, monitoring and managing complications was undertaken. A multidisciplinary approach to manage a patient with less invasive techniques yielded a good outcome. This management option may be considered as an alternative for open surgery for hemodynamically stable patients in experienced centres.

Open reduction and internal fixation for displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children with crossed K-wires via lateral approach.
To assess the therapeutic results of open reduction and internal fixation with crossed K-wires via lateral approach for displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children. ⋯ Lateral approach for open reduction and internal fixation of the widely-displaced supracondylar fracture of the humerus is safe and straightforward, ensuring anatomical reduction and excellent function. The approach is easy and familiar to most orthopedic surgeons in our setup.

Changes of serum Tau, GFAP, TNF-α and malonaldehyde after blast-related traumatic brain injury.
To determine the changes of serum Tau protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and malonaldehyde (MDA) in rats after blast-related traumatic brain injury (BTBI) and to provide relative information for further studies on BTBI mechanism and seek specific biomarkers for BTBI. ⋯ The changes of serum Tau, GFAP, and TNF-α showed a good sensitivity at the acute phase after BTBI (within 24 h). However, their specificity and correlation with the extent of injury were limited in this experiment. Moreover, although the change of serum MDA showed a poor sensitivity and specificity to the diagnosis of BTBI during the first few days, it can reflect the injury degree at 6 d after injury. Therefore, further studies are needed to improve the methods of detecting more serum markers and investigate the significance of multiple markers in diagnosing BTBI.
