In the first part of this article (Vol 53(7) 1995, p.327), the physiology of vomiting and the factors known to influence postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) were summarised. In this second part the therapeutic options available to reduce the incidence of PONV are reviewed.

Community health councils (CHCs) are the local 'patients' watchdogs' for the NHS. CHCs were set up by the Government in 1974 to monitor and review the NHS and to recommend improvements. They are independent of local health authorities and trusts and are concerned with all aspects of the NHS.

The first article in this series (Vol 52 (11), p.583) discussed the pathophysiological processes involved in burn injury. This article describes the early management of large burns, in which treatment is considered in four stages: resuscitation, assessment, further care and transfer. The mnemonic 'RAFT' is suggested as a means of assisting recall of the management process.
