Cost-effectiveness of screening for open angle glaucoma in developed countries.
As all developed countries are struggling with health care costs growing too large and too fast, the current performance and overburden of glaucoma services demand a reappraisal of current management strategies. The performance of the glaucoma care in western countries offers several opportunities to improve the simultaneous under- and over-diagnosis and treatment. ⋯ The limited evidence to date indicates that we do not have enough evidence to decide whether systematic population screening could be cost-effective in the developed world. This article gives an overview of the methods of economic evaluation and the evidence on cost-effectiveness of systematic screening for glaucoma in the developed world, need for future research and challenges related to evaluation of increasing economic literature as well as need to change behaviors on the basis of evidence.

Technical aspects of laser treatment for acute retinopathy of prematurity under topical anesthesia.
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a significant cause of childhood blindness. The criteria for laser therapy have been revised from threshold ROP to include the earlier stage of high-risk prethreshold ROP. Laser photocoagulation is an established technique for the treatment of ROP. ⋯ Laser under topical anesthesia has been practiced in India as a preferred modality especially due to logistics and risks of general anesthesia in these pre-term babies. We discuss the details of the technique as practiced at tertiary care ophthalmic hospitals in India, so that the nuances in treatment parameters and clinical decision-making can be usefully applied to ophthalmic practice. This will ultimately lead to safe and effective treatment delivery in ROP.

A bibliometric study of publications by Indian ophthalmologists and vision researchers, 2001-06.
The objective was to conduct a bibliometric analysis of Indian ophthalmic papers published from 2001 to 2006 in the peer-reviewed journals, to assess productivity, trends in journal choice, publication types, research funding, and collaborative research. ⋯ This bibliometric study of publications of research from India in the field of ophthalmic and vision research shows that research productivity, as measured in both the number of publications in peer-reviewed journals and qualitative measures of those journals, has increased during the period of this study.

We report a large series of ocular injuries caused by fire-crackers. This study was a hospital-based, singlecenter, retrospective case series in which the records of 51 patients with ocular injuries were analyzed. ⋯ Ten patients were admitted for further management. As ocular firecracker injuries result in significant morbidity, public education regarding proper use of firecrackers may help in reducing the incidence of ocular injuries.
