[The Japanese Breast Cancer Society Breast Cancer Registry in the National Clinical Database: current status and future perspectives].
The Japanese Breast Cancer Society (JBCS) has been accumulating breast cancer patient data since 1975, which reached a total of 188,265 cases over 29 years. However, the recent increase in breast cancer incidence in Japan has made it impossible to maintain the same data pooling system for further analysis of disease trends. ⋯ Furthermore, since 2012, the JBCS Breast Cancer Registry has been combined with the National Clinical Database (NCD). This article summarizes the current status of the NCD Breast Cancer Registry in conjunction with future perspectives, including quality indicator analysis, guideline evaluation using prognostic outcomes, and development of a real-time personalized survival analysis tool using the NCD Breast Cancer Database.

[Evolution and future of the National Clinical Database: feedback for surgical quality improvement].
The National Clinical Database (NCD) was founded in April 2010 as the parent body of a database linked to the surgical board certification system. Registration began in 2011, and to date more than 3,900 facilities have enrolled, with an accumulation of more than 1.02 million cases per year. Related activities will primarily focus on providing high-quality healthcare to patients and the general public, with the clinical setting serving as the driving force behind improvements. ⋯ Risk models have been created for the mortality and morbidity of each procedure. These models will be available for participating hospitals and may be useful for decision making by surgeons as well as patient counseling. Studies are in progress using the NCD database to contribute to improving the quality control of surgical procedures.

The Japan Cardiovascular Surgery Database (JCVSD) was established in 2000 to contribute to quality improvement in cardiovascular surgery nationwide. Data are entered via the Internet, and variables were imported from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons National Database of North America. At present, the number of participating hospitals exceeds 500, and the cumulative number of data entries exceeds 220,000. ⋯ The Data Access Committee handles applications submitted for data analysis usage from participating hospitals. Based on those data analyses, more than 20 frequently cited papers have been published in international medical journals. Recently, the JCVSD has been linked with the board certification system in the field of cardiovascular medicine, in which almost all hospitals in Japan participate, and it was used for board certification in 2013 for the first time.
