641 patients who had undergone ultrasonic investigation of the shoulder joint were reviewed retrospectively. Thirty-four cases (5.3%) with sonographic abnormalities of the biceps tendon or the soft tissue surrounding the biceps tendon were found. In 15 cases a synovitis or effusion of the bicipital (convexity of the transverse ligament) groove was found. ⋯ Four cases with cysts of the biceps tendon were seen (well defined zone of low echogenity). Seven patients underwent surgery following unsuccessful conservative treatment and in all cases but one the ultrasonic diagnosis was confirmed. According to the experience of this investigation ultrasonic examination of the biceps tendon turned out to be an ideal imaging technique for screening of lesions of the long head of the biceps.

Review Case Reports[Atlanto-axial rotational subluxation in children: therapy in delayed diagnosis].
Children may develop a torticollis due to Rotatory Subluxation not only after minor trauma, infections of the upper respiratory tract, surgical procedures in the oropharynx but also spontaneously. Three cases with a delay in diagnosis are presented; the typical symptoms and other causes of torticollis are discussed. The suggested treatment is mobilisation under general anaesthesia, fixation with a Halo for a few days and consecutive immobilisation in a Minerva cast for 4-8 weeks. This regimen was successful in all three cases.

Review[Diagnosis and therapy of osteoid osteoma of the vertebral lamina--a literature review and personal experiences].
Osteoid-osteoma is a benign tumor which is rarely situated in the spine. Five patients with osteoid-osteoma of the lamina treated surgically at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the University of Mainz between november 1990 and january 1992 are reviewed. The combination of pain, painful reactive scoliotic position of the spine or torticollis, hot spot in scintigraphy and nidus in computer tomography is the typical feature of the tumor. ⋯ Surgical treatment afforded immediate relief of pain and an early return to full spinal mobility. In case of persisting backache especially in children or young adults osteoid-osteoma of the spine must be suspected. The scintigraphy represents the most sensitive method of diagnosis in the early stage.

[Walking ability in bilateral leg amputees following prosthetic rehabilitation].
Between January 1989 and March 1993 117 patients were treated after acquired bilateral amputation of the lower extremities at the "Klinik und Poliklinik für Technische Orthopädie und Rehabilitation der Westfälischen Wilhelms-Universität Münster", Germany. Information from patients files and telephone interviews were collected to assess the degree of use of prostheses. ⋯ None of the patients with bilateral knee-disarticulation or higher levels of amputation used prosthetic devices for regular walking. In patients with amputation levels between these extremes the result of rehabilitation with prostheses is determined mainly by the cause of the amputation.
