Comparative Study[Diagnosis of Clostridium difficile infections: comparative study of two immuno enzyme assays with confirmation by PCR and culture followed by PCR ribotyping].
Comparison of two commercially avail-able tests for the detection of Clostridium difficile Glutamate Dehydrogenase (GDH) and toxins A and B for their sensitivity and specificity. ⋯ The Liaison® test had seven percent higher sensitivity for the detection of toxins A/B. The two-step protocol of the tests is also cost-saving. The savings can be used e.g. for incorporating the PCR techniques into the diagnostic algorithm of the laboratory.

[Invasive meningococcal disease in the Czech Republic - analysis of the epidemiological situation and vaccination strategy recommendations].
Analysis of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) surveillance data including molecular epidemio-logy data. Vaccination strategy recommendations based on the current epidemiological situation of IMD in the Czech Republic and availability of meningococcal vaccines. ⋯ Based on the IMD surveillance data from the Czech Republic, the NRL recommends a vaccination strategy to provide an adequate protection to individuals. To induce an immune response as wide as possible, the tetravalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine A,C,Y,W135 in combination with the newly registered MenB vaccine designed by reverse vaccinology should be given. To maintain immunity, subsequent booster doses are required at intervals depending on the primary vaccination age.

[Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum -- the causative agent of neurosyphilis].
Neurosyphilis is defined as infection of central nervous system by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Neurosyphilis can develop at any stage after initial infec-tion and is reflected in laboratory results. ⋯ Individuals with persistent abnormalities in the cerebrospinal fluid are at risk of the development of clinical manifestations. Proper understanding of particular forms of neurosyphilis for differential diagnosis is important to determine potential risk of the development of progressive disease in neurology.

[Apitherapy--the role of honey in the chronic wound healing process].
With increasing frequency, modern medicine directs attention to natural products and biological therapy methods and their use in clinical practice. Bee honey as well as other bee products (propolis, royal jelly and venom) have already found use in medicine not only as immune system stimulants but also as chronic wound healing promoters. ⋯ Controlled clinical trials have shown honey to be effective in chronic wound healing and gave rise to medihoney. Nevertheless, further study is needed to confirm the efficacy and safety of honey in clinical practice.

Comparative Study[Calprotectin levels in patients with idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease comparison of two commercial tests].
Fecal calprotectin test is a simple, non-invasive, rapid and inexpensive diagnostic tool allowing differentiation between GIT functional disorders and inflammatory conditions and relapse prediction in non-specific inflammatory bowel disease. In the last year, commercially available ELISA diagnostic kits, using either monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies against a heterodimeric complex, calprotectin, for the detection of fecal calprotectin, started to be marketed. ⋯ Both of the tested kits have comparably good measurement parameters, the Bühlmann kit using monoclonal antibody against calprotectin showed higher sensitivity and specificity. In view of their availability, sensitivity and performance, the fecal calprotectin ELISA kits are helpful diagnostic tools for clinical practice.
