To assess diagnostic value of Carbohydrate Antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9), combined CA 19-9 and K-ras mutation in plasma DNA in diagnosing patients with pancreatic carcinoma. ⋯ CA 19-9 was a high sensitive and K-ras was a high specific method in diagnosing patients with pancreatic cancer. These two modalities probably act different roles during different conditions in diagnosing pancreatic carcinoma.

It is possible that brucellosis may be related to increase free radical production and antioxidant depletion. Thus, in the present study we aimed to evaluate the oxidative status in patient with brucellosis and healthy controls. ⋯ Brucellosis is an infection that is frequently seen in Mediterranean countries. This infection breaks the oxidant and antioxidant balance. In this disease, oxidant-antioxidant system indicators such as ceruloplasmin, total antioxidant capacity, total oxidant status and oxidative stress index can be used for showing the role of the brucella infection and for the monitoring of the treatment results.

Sepsis-induced organ failure is the major cause of death, and is characterized by a massive dysregulated inflammatory response. The present study was to determine whether interleukin 6 (IL-6) expression was increased in sepsis rats and the roles of IL-6 in the damage of cardiac, liver and renal function in the sepsis rats. Sepsis rat models were elicited by intravenous injection of LPS. ⋯ IL-6 significantly reduced LVDP and average ±dP/dt, increased the activities of ALT and AST, and increased the concentration of creatinine in the sepsis rats. EX527, a sirtuin 1 (SIRT 1) inhibitor, blocked the effects of IL-6 in the sepsis rats. These results indicate that IL-6 plays important roles in the damage of cardiac, liver and renal function in the sepsis rats through SIRT 1.

This study aims to learn about the current situation of surgical massive blood transfusion in China's Class III general hospitals, which could provide the basis for the formulation of guidelines on massive blood transfusion. ⋯ During massive blood transfusion, clinicians in 20 Chinese hospitals paid more attention to the infusion of fresh frozen plasma while making the infusion of red blood cells. However, they paid little attention to the supplement of platelet and cryocepitate.

It is controversial that whether the GABA receptors contribute to the hypnotic action of volatile anesthetics. This study was to detect the effect of GABA receptors on the hypnotic action of volatile anesthetics by evaluation of the effect of intravenous flumazenil on sevoflurane minimum alveolar anesthetic concentration-awake (MAC-Awake) and emergence mental status. ⋯ We found that an IV flumazenil (0.006 mg/Kg) has no effect on sevoflurane MAC-Awake in humans. A single intravenous injection of flumazenil (0.006 mg/Kg) can partially reverse the hypnotic effect of sevoflurane/sulfentanil but do not contribute to reduction in the time to recovery and extubation.
