To review infants and children with intussusception and assess its magnitude of concern and any seasonal variation in our environment. ⋯ The approximate incidence of intussusception in less than one-year olds is 1:7557 in Dar es Salaam. It is a concern in our environment causing considerable morbidity and mortality due to late presentation and efforts should be made to improve sanitation and hygiene, referring health facilities, socio-economic factors and probably look into ways of preventing the problem occurring. Seasonal variation was seen, most cases(78.6%) presenting in the dry season when there is shortage of water in the city.

Clinical characteristics of Burkitt's lymphoma seen in Kenyan patients.
To document the clinical features of Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) in the study population. ⋯ The clinical features are protean and BL is a rapidly progressive disease, presenting with swelling, majority in the jaw and abdomen in childhood and young adults. Age, sex and geographical (province) appear to influence the primary site of the disease. Also BL is a differential in many clinical presentations in this childhood setting.

To assess excreta and waste disposal facilities available and their impact on sanitation related diseases in Epworth, an informal settlement on the outskirts of Harare. ⋯ It is recommended that households and the local authorities concentrate on improving the provision of toilets, water and waste disposal facilities as a way of improving the health state of the community.

Malnutrition is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children aged five years and below. Risk factors for severe protein energy malnutrition (PEM) have been identified as ignorance, family size, mothers and fathers education, poverty, residence, chronic infections, and congenital defects or malformations. The role of such social factors as the caretaker, extended family, homestead surroundings, and family cohesiveness have not been studied in Kenya. ⋯ Poverty, social conditions under which the child was living, sex of the child and incomplete immunizations were risk factors for the severe protein energy malnutrition.

To determine the pattern, presentation and outcome of gastrointestinal injuries from blunt abdominal trauma in children. ⋯ Gastrointestinal injury from blunt abdominal trauma in children, though uncommon, carries a high mortality, usually from associated intraabdominal or extraabdominal injuries.
