This article presents the new guidelines for resuscitation of the newborn from the European Resuscitation Council. It is estimated that, potentially, 800,000 newborns can be saved each year by simple airways manoeuvres. Personnel trained in basic resuscitation should be present at all deliveries and personnel trained in advanced resuscitation at deliveries with known risk factors. ⋯ Chest compressions--1/3 of the anteroposterior diameter of the chest--should be provided if the heart rate is absent or remains < below 60 per minute despite adequate assisted ventilation for 30 seconds. Chest compressions should be coordinated with ventilation at a ratio of 3:1 and a rate of 120 "events" per minute to achieve approximately 90 compressions and 30 rescue breaths per minute. Adrenalin should be given if the heart rate remains below 60 per minute despite 30 seconds of effective ventilation and chest compression.

[Emergency psychiatric departments are not refusing admissions].
The staff at the psychiatric emergency out-patient clinic in Oslo evaluated the services of the acute psychiatric wards when admitting patients to the hospital. Of 93 admittances during three months in 1998, the referring doctor was satisfied with the hospital's response in 84% of the cases. The mean time from contact was taken with the hospital till the admittance was accepted was 19 minutes. The admittance of patients in acute psychiatric hospitals in Oslo is straightforward, and reasonably well organized.

Case Reports[Phlegmasia cerulea dolens as the initial symptom of abdominal aortic aneurysm].
Phlegmasia cerulea dolens is a serious condition and a result of central venous obstruction which can lead to venous gangrena and amputation of the affected limb. Multiple underlying conditions are described: malignant disease, trauma and hypercoagulable states such as heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, deficiency of protein C and antithrombin III. ⋯ We present a patient who developed phlegmasia cerulea dolens in his left lower limb as a result of an undiagnosed lumbal aortic aneurysm. To our knowledge this is the first report of phlegmasia cerulea dolens as the initial symptom of an abdominal aneurysm.

Case Reports[Massive pulmonary embolism--echocardiographic diagnosis and thrombolytic therapy].
Thrombolysis is widely accepted as the treatment of choice for acute massive life-threatening pulmonary embolism. Several trials have shown that thrombolytic treatment has reduced morbidity and mortality in this condition, compared to heparin therapy. Rapid diagnosis and treatment start is mandatory for improving the prognosis. ⋯ Different thrombolytic regimens were used. Echocardiography may be used as the initial imaging technique for the diagnosis of massive pulmonary embolism. The advantages are obvious, and thrombolytic treatment can be initiated without delay.
