The authors made radioisotope examinations of the erythrokinetics in 21 patients with primary myelodysplastic syndrome: refractory anaemia and sideroblastic anaemia. He investigated the importance of changes of several conventional erythrokinetic parameters as well as the turnover of transferrin molecules which is an indicator of erythropoietic activity independent on sideraemia. The author presents ferrokinetic and erythrokinetic findings associated with myelodysplastic syndrome, as described in the literature. Sideroblastic anaemia produces a typical picture during examination of the erythrokinetics, quite different from other sub-types of the disease in refractory anaemia the changes of parameters are very variable.

[Predictive value of indicators of oxygen supply to tissues in patients with chronic obstructive lung disease].
The authors investigated in a group of 83 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease the prognostic impact of some indicators of pulmonary function, haemodynamics and oxygen transport. They demonstrated that the prognosis is less favourable in patients with a lower one-second vital capacity with a higher median pressure in the pulmonary artery, with a lower oxygen tension in the arterial blood and higher haemoglobin concentration. ⋯ Oxygen inhalation led to an increased oxygen supply of tissues and increased oxygen tension in mixed venous blood to normal values in all examined groups. This observation may be one of the explanations of the more favourable prognosis of patients with respiratory insufficiency, associated with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, who have permanent oxygen therapy during domiciliary care.

[Long-term pain therapy in malignancies using epidural administration of opiates].
The authors explain basic anatomical and pharmacological principles of epidural opiate analgesia. As to clinical aspects, the authors mention briefly the technique of epidural analgesia. They summarize, based on their own experience and data in the literature, the period of insertion of an epidural catheter, opiate dosage in morphine equivalents, the need of adjuvant treatment and complications. They mention briefly various techniques which can be used in epidural opiate analgesia with an outline on perspectives of this method.

Comparative Study[Comparison of methods of cryopreservation of blood platelets].
In the submitted paper the author compares two different methods of cryopreservation of thrombocyte concentrates by means of in vitro tests with the aim to find under local conditions a suitable method of cryopreservation of platelets suited for practical use. Thrombocyte concentrates were preserved by non-programmed deep freezing at -80 degrees C with storage of platelets at the same temperature and programmed deep freezing up to -100 degrees C with subsequent storage of platelets in liquid nitrogen vapours. ⋯ For cryopreservation of platelets it will be useful to use the method of non-programmed freezing at -80 degrees C because it is simple and feasible. The process of cryopreservation proper of thrombocytes, incl. washing, did not lead to a marked drop in the number of platelets, as compared with values before freezing.

[Diabetic ketoacidosis and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar nonacidotic syndrome in type I and II diabetics].
The author analyzes 46 hyperglycaemic comatose conditions in diabetics treated at the medical clinic of the Paediatric Faculty, Charles University Prague in 1978-1985. In the group older patients with type II diabetes predominated, where acute decompensation was frequently of the hyperosmolar type without acidosis and it was usually associated with a higher mortality. ⋯ Insulin was administered in small doses by the i.v. route either as a continuous infusion or in fractionated doses. The results of both procedures were comparable only the insulin requirement in the fractionated doses was higher.
