Comparative StudySt. Jude Trifecta versus Carpentier-Edwards Perimount Magna valves for the treatment of aortic stenosis: comparison of early Doppler-echocardiography and hemodynamic performance.
Aim of this study was to compare the hemodynamic profiles of 2 aortic valve bioprostheses: the Carpentier Edwards Perimount Magna (CEPM) valve and the Trifecta valve. ⋯ The new bioprosthetic valve Trifecta has an excellent hemodynamic profile, and lower trans-prosthesic gradients when compared to CEPM valve.

We present a case of a 67-year-old male with pulmonary embolism. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) showed the presence of a mobile thrombus straddling the patent foramen ovale (PFO) and prolapsing into both atria. ⋯ Five days after admission, repeat TEE revealed a reduction in thrombus dimensions, so anticoagulation therapy was continued. Eleven days after admission, TEE showed complete disappearance of the thrombus.

Review[The portopulmonary hypertension: an overview from diagnosis to treatment].
Portopulmonary hypertension (POPH) refers to the condition of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in association with portal hypertension. Among patients with portal hypertension, reported incidence rates of POPH range from 2 to 10% and long-term prognosis in cases of POPH is poor. Fundamental issues of management of POPH include identification of patients likely to benefit from liver transplantation (LTx) and treatment with specific pulmonary vasodilators before and after LTx. This review presents as an overview of the current knowledge on the epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of patients with portopulmonary hypertension.

ReviewElectronic cigarette: a possible substitute for cigarette dependence.
Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of premature mortality in western countries and it is important for smokers to stop as early as possible. Electronic cigarettes are a popular phenomenon of global proportion. ⋯ This could hint a role for electronic cigarettes to be used for smoking cessation, and therefore merits further evaluation for this purpose. Besides vaporising nicotine to be inhaled, electronic cigarettes may also provide a coping mechanism for conditioned smoking cues by replacing some of the rituals associated with smoking gestures, and for these reasons cigarette could become a tool--if studied more extensively--in the fight against tobacco-related morbidity and mortality.
