Health-Related Quality of Life in Common Variable Immunodeficiency Italian Patients Switched to Remote Assistance During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
A rapidly expanding pandemic of the new coronavirus has become the focus of global scientific attention. Data are lacking on the impact of the pandemic caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 on health-related quality of life among patients affected by primary antibody deficiencies (PADs). ⋯ The coronavirus disease 2019 epidemic impacted HRQOL and the risk of anxiety/depression of patients with PADs. The remote assistance program was a useful possibility to limit personal contacts without influencing the HRQOL.

Clinical and Serological Characterization of the α-Gal Syndrome-Importance of Atopy for Symptom Severity in a European Cohort.
The galactose-α1,3-galactose (α-Gal) syndrome (AGS) is a novel form of food allergy. Patients experience delayed severe allergic reactions after mammalian meat consumption due to IgE antibodies directed against the carbohydrate α-Gal present in mammalian meat. The onset of the disease is associated with tick bites. ⋯ AGS is an upcoming food allergy where patients report severe symptoms and tick bites. Atopy was found to affect the manifestation of the disease in Swedish patients.

Desloratadine Use During Pregnancy and Risk of Adverse Fetal Outcomes: A Nationwide Cohort Study.
Desloratadine is a frequently used drug for the treatment of allergic disorders, which often also require treatment during pregnancy. However, information on the fetal safety of desloratadine use during pregnancy is limited. ⋯ Use of desloratadine during pregnancy was not associated with a statistically significant increased risk of adverse fetal outcomes as compared with loratadine. Results indicate that the fetal safety profile of desloratadine is similar to the currently recommended second-generation antihistamines during pregnancy.

A Streamlined Approach to Optimize Perioperative Antibiotic Prophylaxis in the Setting of Penicillin Allergy Labels.
Patients with penicillin allergy labels often receive alternative antibiotics for perioperative prophylaxis, as opposed to first-line cephalosporins (cefazolin/cefuroxime). Provider misconceptions about the risk of cross-reactivity likely drive this prescribing behavior, which is problematic because of its association with increased risk of surgical-site infections. ⋯ Using a streamlined algorithm, we were able to significantly reduce the use of second-line antibiotics in penicillin-allergic surgical patients without severe adverse reactions.

Natural Language Processing Combined with ICD-9-CM Codes as a Novel Method to Study the Epidemiology of Allergic Drug Reactions.
Allergic drug reaction epidemiologic data are sparse because it remains difficult to identify true cases in large data sets using manual chart review. ⋯ Using NLP with ICD-9-CM codes improved identification of allergic drug reactions. The resulting decrease in manual chart review effort will facilitate large epidemiology studies of this understudied area.
