Lymphocyte transformation, production of neutralizing antibody, and interferon activity of 20 healthy volunteers in response to a human diploid cell strain (HDCS) of rabies virus vaccine were studied. Ten vaccines received 1.0 ml of HDCS vaccine on days 0, 3, 7, and 14, and five of these volunteers received, in addition, 20 international units of human rabies immune globulin/kg of body weight on day 0. ⋯ The interferon responses of eight vaccines to 1.0 ml of HDCS vaccine given intramuscularly on days 0 and 28 and of two vaccines to 1.0 ml of vaccine given intradermally in eight body sites on the same days were measured; low levels of interferon-like activity were found in eight of nine volunteers after the first vaccination, and no activity was found upon revaccination. The high titers of neutralizing antibody that developed did not correlate with lymphocyte stimulation or interferon-like activity, but it is true that all 20 volunteers did develop high titers of neutralizing antibody after 1.0 ml of HDCS vaccine was given intradermally.

Clinical and microbiological investigation of men with urethritis.
Of 377 men attending clinics for the treatment of sexually transmitted disease, 104 had gonococcal urethritis, 72 had definite nongonococcal urethritis, 53 had possible nongonococcal urethritis, and 123 had no urethritis. A purulent urethral discharge was noted in 78% and 14% of patients with gonococcal urethritis and definite nongonococcal urethritis, respectively (P less than 0.001). In contrast, 4% and 64% of men with gonococcal urethritis and definite nongonococcal urethritis, respectively, had a clear urethral discharge (P less than 0.001). ⋯ Homosexual and bisexual white men with urethritis were more likely to have gonorrhea, whereas heterosexual white men with urethritis were more likely to have nongonococcal urethritis. Heterosexual men were more likely than homosexual men to be colonized with Ureaplasma urealyticum. There were no differences in the rates of colonization with Mycoplasma hominis among heterosexual and homosexual men.

For determination of the best basis on which to calculate dosages of gentamicin or tobramycin to be administered to obese patients, the pharmacokinetics of these drugs were studied in 13 obese subjects and 13 subjects of a normal weight following intravenous infusion of 1 mg/kg. Half-lives, elimination constants, and absolute and relative volumes of distribution were calculated. ⋯ These results indicate that gentamicin and tobramycin are distributed less to adipose tissue than to other tissues, but partial distribution to adipose tissue does occur. The mean relative volume of distribution in obese subjects closely approximated that in normal subjects when normalized body mass plus 40% of the adipose mass was used as the total weight in obese subjects.

After the isolation of A/New Jersey/76 (Hsw1N1) influenza virus from five soldiers at Fort Dix, New Jersey, case finding was initiated by obtaining specimens for viral isolation from 95 patients with acute respiratory disease and determining antibody to influenza A/Mayo Clinic/103/74 (Hsw1N1) antigen in paired sera from 74 soldiers who had been hospitalized with acute respiratory disease. Influenza A/New Jersey virus was not isolated, but serologic studies identified eight additional soldiers as A/New Jersey influenza patients. ⋯ One of the 13 identified patients had died, and postmortem findings were consistent with viral pneumonia. Four of the 12 surviving patients had radiologic evidence of pneumonia, but clinical syndromes in all 12 were similar to those described for other influenza A infections.
