Randomized Controlled TrialDetermining the impact of a surgical liaison nurse role in the paediatric operating room.
A two-group (N = 92) quasi-experimental pre-post test design was used to examine the effects of intra-operative communication by a surgical liaison nurse (SLN) on parental anxiety. Group I received in person progress reports from the SLN. Group II received routine perioperative care. ⋯ Thematic written responses provided examples of improved care and effective time management behaviours on the part of the health care professionals. Written responses provided validation for the scale scores for both families and health care professionals and were an indication of the support for the role of the surgical liaison nurse. Qualitative findings implied that the surgical liaison nurse facilitated the transfer of necessary information between the perioperative care team and the family thus providing a support mechanism for families under stress.

The author shares a personal experience, during a night shift in the OR, that changed her forever. I was defined as a nurse by that moment of trauma. I spent 9 years as a trauma specialist in a large U. ⋯ To this day I can tell if a patient is going to die on the table, I can smell it. I had faced fear and death, and survived. I was certainly not "new" anymore... nor was I naïve.

This article explores the concepts of bullying and harassment, defines the terms and their implications, and explores similarities and differences between the two. It also examines pertinent legislation and identifies strategies to raise awareness and optimise a bullying and harassment-free perioperative environment. Bullying and harassment in the workplace was the focus of this presentation at NATN Congress 2002. Challenging behaviours involving patients and careers is another topic in itself.

Today health care is an orchestra. Patients arrive hours before surgery and leave hours afterward. They bring manila folders full of downloaded information and question lists. They maneuver themselves through complex systems; they are instrumental in coordinating their own needs and care.

The surgical count plays a vital role in enabling perioperative nurses to provide a safe environment to surgical patients. Counting errors are preventable. ⋯ This article will discuss the risk factors for retained items, rate of occurrence, what objects are being left in patients, role of x-rays and consequences of leaving an object in a patient. It will also highlight points to be considered when implementing new count policies.
