Effects of the Helicobacter pylori Virulence Factor CagA and Ammonium Ion on Mucins in AGS Cells.
To investigate the effects of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-CagA and the urease metabolite NH₄⁺ on mucin expression in AGS cells. ⋯ H. pylori may affect the expression of MUC5AC, MUC2, MUC5B, and MUC6 in AGS cells via CagA and/or NH₄⁺, but not E-cadherin.

Effect of Socioeconomic Status and Underlying Disease on the Association between Ambient Temperature and Ischemic Stroke.
Inconsistent findings have been reported regarding the effect of ambient temperature on ischemic stroke. Furthermore, little is known about how underlying disease and low socioeconomic status influence the association. We, therefore, investigated the relationship between ambient temperature and emergency department (ED) visits for ischemic stroke, and aimed to identify susceptible populations. ⋯ Ambient temperature increases above a threshold were positively associated with ED visits for ischemic stroke in patients with diabetes and medical aid beneficiaries in summer. In winter, temperature, to a point, and ischemic stroke visits were inversely associated.

Variants in the Gene EBF2 Are Associated with Kawasaki Disease in a Korean Population.
Kawasaki disease (KD) is a mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome. It is mainly seen in young children under the age of five. KD is a multifactorial disorder that includes genetic variants. The present study investigated the association between KD and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the candidate gene early B cell factor 2 (EBF2), which is associated with inflammation markers. ⋯ EBF2 gene variants can contribute to KD in the Korean population.

Comparative StudyThe Impact of Prediabetes on Two-Year Clinical Outcomes in Patients Undergoing Elective Percutaneous Coronary Intervention.
Prediabetes is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, data on the long term adverse clinical outcomes of prediabetic patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with drug-eluting stents (DESs) are scarce. ⋯ In our study, a higher death rate and a trend toward a higher incidence of restenosis in patients with prediabetes up to 2 years, compared to those in normoglycemic patients, undergoing elective PCI with contemporary DESs.

miR-215 Enhances HCV Replication by Targeting TRIM22 and Inactivating NF-κB Signaling.
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of liver disease. Several miRNAs have been found to be associated with HCV infection. This study aimed to investigate the functional roles and possible molecular mechanisms of miR-215 in HCV replication. ⋯ miR-215 facilitated HCV replication via inactivation of the NF-κB pathway by inhibiting TRIM22, providing a novel potential target for HCV infection.
