Epidural dexamethasone decreased inflammatory hyperalgesia and spinal cPLA₂ expression in a rat formalin test.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of epidural dexamethasone on analgesia and cytosolic phospholipase A₂ (cPLA₂) expression in the spinal cord in a rat formalin test. ⋯ Taken together, these results suggest that 300 μg of epidural dexamethasone has an attenuating effect on the peripheral inflammatory tissue injury induced hyperalgesia and this effect is mediated through the inhibition of intraspinal cPLA₂ expression and the primary site of action is the laminae I-II of the spinal cord.

Clinical experience of weight loss surgery in morbidly obese Korean adolescents.
Comprehensive multidisciplinary weight management programs encompassing various conservative measures have shown only modest weight loss results in obese children and adolescents; therefore, bariatric surgery for this population has become a matter of discussion. This study aimed to present our experience with and outcomes for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) in morbidly obese Korean adolescents. ⋯ Bariatric surgery leads to significant short-term weight loss along with resolution of obesity-related comorbidities in obese children and adolescents.

Prognostic value of sex-hormone receptor expression in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer.
We investigated sex-hormone receptor expression as predicting factor of recurrence and progression in patients with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. ⋯ We concluded that the possibility of recurrence was low when the androgen receptor was expressed in the bladder cancer specimen and it could be the predicting factor of the stage, number of tumors, carcinoma in situ lesion and recurrence.

Overexpression of mucin 13 due to promoter methylation promotes aggressive behavior in ovarian cancer cells.
Recent discoveries suggest that aberrant DNA methylation provides cancer cells with advanced metastatic properties. However, the precise regulatory mechanisms controlling metastasis genes and their role in metastatic transformation are largely unknown. To address epigenetically-regulated gene products involved in ovarian cancer metastasis, we examined the mechanisms regulating mucin 13 (MUC13) expression and its influence on aggressive behaviors of ovarian malignancies. ⋯ We provide novel evidence for epigenetic regulation of MUC13 in ovarian cancer. We suggest that the DNA methylation status within the MUC13 promoter region may be a potential biomarker of aggressive behavior in ovarian cancer.

Case ReportsSilicon dioxide particles deposited in vessels and cartilage of the femoral head.
Silicosis had been considered for decades as an illness with manifestations of lung fibrosis due to inhalation of overconcentrated SiO₂ dust. To the best of our knowledge, studies have yet to report SiO₂ deposits in any other tissues and organs. In the present case, while performing bilateral artificial total hip arthroplasty for one patient, we found that the articular cartilage of the bilateral femoral head was black. ⋯ Pathological examination (immunohistochemistry) and polarized light microscopy revealed the presence of considerable brown, acicular, rhombic, and crumb-like crystals. The crystals were mainly composed of SiO₂. SiO₂ could deposit in vessels and femoral head cartilage via blood circulation.
