The prevalence of idiopathic scoliosis in eleven year-old Korean adolescents: a 3 year epidemiological study.
School screening allows for early detection and early treatment of scoliosis, with the purpose of reducing the number of patients requiring surgical treatment. Children between 10 and 14 years old are considered as good candidates for school screening tests of scoliosis. The purpose of the present study was to assess the epidemiological findings of idiopathic scoliosis in 11-year-old Korean adolescents. ⋯ The prevalence of idiopathic scoliosis among 11-year-old Korean adolescents was 0.19%.

Red cell distribution width as an independent predictor of exercise intolerance and ventilatory inefficiency in patients with chronic heart failure.
Peak oxygen uptake (peak VO₂) and ventilatory inefficiency (VE/VCO₂ slope) have proven to be strong prognostic markers in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Recently increased red cell distribution width (RDW) has emerged as an additional predictor of poor outcome in CHF. We sought to evaluate the relationship between RDW and cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) parameters in CHF patients and healthy controls. ⋯ Higher RDW is independently related to peak VO₂ and VE/VCO₂ slope only in patients with CHF. RDW assessment, an inexpensive and simple method, might help predict functional capacity and ventilatory efficiency in these patients.

Finding the 'ideal' regimen for fentanyl-based intravenous patient-controlled analgesia: how to give and what to mix?
This analysis was done to investigate the optimal regimen for fentanyl-based intravenous patient-controlled analgesia (IV-PCA) by finding a safe and effective background infusion rate and assessing the effect of adding adjuvant drugs to the PCA regimen. ⋯ Background infusion rates of fentanyl between 0.12 and 0.67 μg/kg/hr may safely be used without any serious side effects for IV-PCA. In order to approach the most reasonable background infusion rate for effective analgesia without increasing postoperative nausea and vomiting, adding an adjuvant analgesic and an antiemetic should always be considered.

Expression of glycolysis-related proteins in solid papillary carcinoma of the breast according to basement membrane status.
The aim of this study was to investigate the differences of expression in glycolysis-related proteins such as Glut-1, carbonic anhydrase (CA) IX, and monocarboxylate transporter (MCT) 4 according to the myoepithelial cell (MEC) and basement membrane (BM) status in solid papillary carcinoma (SPC) of the breast. ⋯ In SPC of the breast, a strong expression of CAIX seems to be associated with an increasing degree of loss of BM, which can be interpreted as BM degradation due to the induction of extracellular acidity with increasing expression of CAIX.

Sex differences in remifentanil requirements for preventing cough during anesthetic emergence.
Target-controlled infusion (TCI) of remifentanil can suppress coughing during emergence from general anesthesia; nevertheless, previous studies under different clinical conditions recommend significantly different effective effect-site concentrations (effective Ce) of remifentanil for 50% of patients (EC₅₀). The differences among these studies include type of surgery and patient sex. In recent years, study of sex differences in regards to anesthetic pharmacology has drawn greater interest. Accordingly, we attempted to determine the effective Ce of remifentanil for preventing cough for each sex under the same clinical conditions. ⋯ When using remifentanil TCI for cough prevention during anesthetic emergence, patient sex should be a considered for appropriate dosing.
