Low compliance with national guidelines for preventing transmission of group 1 nationally notifiable infectious diseases in Korea.
This study was performed to evaluate the compliance with, and adequacy of, the Korean national guidelines which had been recommended until 2011 for isolation of patients with group 1 nationally notifiable infectious diseases (NNIDs), namely cholera, typhoid fever, paratyphoid fever, shigellosis, and enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) infection. ⋯ Compliance with the previous national guidelines for group 1 NNIDs in Korea was generally very low. Further studies are needed to evaluate whether compliance was improved after implementation of the new guideline in 2012.

Incidences of serious infections and tuberculosis among patients receiving anti-tumor necrosis factor-α therapy.
Anti-tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) medications represent a major advancement in the management of chronic inflammatory diseases. However, these agents are associated with increased risks of tuberculosis (TB) and other serious infections. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidences of such disease among tertiary hospitals in Korea. ⋯ Serious infections with anti-TNF-α therapy were uncommon among tertiary hospitals in Korea; TB was the second most frequent infection. Nevertheless, there were no TB reactivations after anti-TB chemoprophylaxis. Accordingly, physicians should be aware of TB in subjects undergoing anti-TNF-α therapy, especially in countries with a high prevalence of TB.

The usefulness of the Kurashiki prehospital stroke scale in identifying thrombolytic candidates in acute ischemic stroke.
The severity of a stroke cannot be described by widely used prehospital stroke scales. We investigated the usefulness of the Kurashiki Prehospital Stroke Scale (KPSS) for assessing the severity of stroke, compared to the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), in candidate patients for intravenous or intra-arterial thrombolysis who arrived at the hospital within 6 hours of symptom onset. ⋯ The KPSS is an effective prehospital stroke scale for identifying candidates for IV-tPA and IA-UK, as indicated by excellent correlation with the NIHSS, in the assessment of stroke severity in acute ischemic stroke.

Thyroid nodules with macrocalcification: sonographic findings predictive of malignancy.
To analyze which sonographic features of thyroid nodules with macrocalcifications were predictable of thyroid malignancy. ⋯ Sonographic characteristics of macrocalcification such as interruption, irregular thickness and the presence of soft tissue rim were associated with malignancy in thyroid nodules with macrocalcifications.

Changes in coronary perfusion after occlusion of coronary arteries in Kawasaki disease.
Myocardial infarction in children with total occlusion of a coronary artery after Kawasaki disease is rare due to multiple collateral vessels. We aimed to investigate the changes in coronary perfusion associated with coronary artery occlusion after Kawasaki disease. ⋯ The right coronary artery should be followed up carefully because of possible occlusion of new onset or changes in collaterals.
