Acute variceal hemorrhage in patients with liver cirrhosis: weekend versus weekday admissions.
Little is known about the impact of weekend admission on acute variceal hemorrhage (AVH). Thus, we investigated whether day of admission due to AVH influenced in-hospital mortality. ⋯ Weekend admission did not influence in-hospital mortality in patients with cirrhosis who presented AVH.

Herpes simplex virus 2 infection rate and necessity of screening during pregnancy: a clinical and seroepidemiologic study.
This study determined the seroprevalence of herpes virus 2 in gravidas and the differences between herpes virus 2-infected and healthy gravidas. The need to screen gravidas for herpes virus 2 was also evaluated. ⋯ After educating gravidas on genital herpes and, if gravidas thereafter consent to herpes virus 2 screening, the risk of neonatal herpes virus 2 infections can be reduced. In addition, examination of gravidas for sexually transmitted diseases would increase as would appropriate treatment.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyLipid-emulsion propofol less attenuates the regulation of body temperature than micro-emulsion propofol or sevoflurane in the elderly.
Anesthesia and surgery commonly cause hypothermia, and this caused by a combination of anesthetic-induced impairment of thermoregulatory control, a cold operation room environment and other factors that promote heat loss. All the general anesthetics markedly impair normal autonomic thermoregulatory control. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of two different types of propofol versus inhalation anesthetic on the body temperature. ⋯ The body temperature is maintained at a higher level in elderly patients anesthetized with lipid-emulsion propofol.

Clinical TrialTreatment of severe atopic dermatitis with a combination of subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy and cyclosporin.
The clinical efficacy of subcutaneous allergen immunotherapy (SCIT) for the treatment of patients with severe atopic dermatitis (AD) using house dust mite (HDM) extract has been reported. Cyclosporin has been regarded as an effective medication for treatment of severe AD. In this study, we investigated a clinical usefulness of combined treatment with SCIT and cyclosporin in patients with severe AD. ⋯ In this study, combined treatment with SCIT and cyclosporin resulted in significant clinical improvements in patients with severe AD. Further studies are needed to test the clinical usefulness of this combined treatment for patients with severe AD.

Multicenter StudyCut-off values of visceral fat area and waist-to-height ratio: diagnostic criteria for obesity-related disorders in Korean children and adolescents.
The aim of this study was to study the appropriate cut-off value of visceral fat area (VFA) and waist-to-height ratio (WTHR) which increase the risk of obesity-related disorders and to validate the diagnostic criteria of abdominal obesity and metabolic syndrome in Korean children and adolescents. ⋯ Based on the results of this study, VFA which increases the risk of obesity-related disorders was 68.57 cm² and the WTHR corresponding to this VFA was 0.54 for boys and 0.61 for girls age between 10-15 years, 71.70 cm² and the WTHR 0.51 for boys and 0.56 for girls age between 16-18 years. For appropriate diagnostic criteria of abdominal obesity and obesity-related disorders in Korean children and adolescents, further studies are required.
