Identification of differentially expressed genes in papillary thyroid cancers.
Techniques designed to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in tumors have become important in modern pathology. Genefishing technique using the annealing control primer (ACP) system has recently been developed to screen for DEG transcripts. We tried to identify DEGs involved in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) by using Genefishing technique. ⋯ We confirmed 2 DEGs in PTCs as DC-STAMP and type I collagen A1 by using Genefishing technique. Although the detailed functions of those 2 genes and their products remain to be determined, the genes will provide insights into mechanisms of carcinogenesis or tumor progression in PTCs.

Transsternal maximal thymectomy is effective for extirpation of cervical ectopic thymic tissue in the treatment of myasthenia gravis.
Extensive extirpation of cervico-mediastinal adipose tissue increases the chance of removing ectopic thymic tissues, thus potentially improving the prognosis of myasthenia gravis after thymectomy. We sought to increase efficacy and safety of transsternal maximal thymectomy (TSMT). ⋯ TSMT is more effective in the extirpation of ectopic thymic tissues than TSET without significant impairment of safety, especially in the cervical area.

Technology has become a major driver of the future direction of healthcare and surgery. Likewise, the speed of change has accelerated beyond comprehension, with a number of revolutions occurring during a surgeon's career. Being an agent of change or rapidly adapting to change has become the hallmark of the gifted surgeon. The fundamental challenges to a future surgeon are addressed from a technological viewpoint, with emphasis on the impact upon healthcare.

Prevalence of Foxp3 positive T regulatory cells is increased during progression of cutaneous squamous tumors.
Forkhead box p3 (Foxp3) positive T regulatory cells (Tregs) have a functionally immunosuppressive property that prevents effector cells from acting against self in autoimmune diseases or a tumor. It is known that Tregs may be highly relevant in cancer progression. Dendritic cells (DCs) induce cutaneous immune response, however several studies have suggested that DCs are involved in immunosuppression. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of Tregs and DCs infiltration in cutaneous premalignant and malignant squamous lesions. ⋯ Tregs is related to cutaneous squamous tumor progression.

The inhibition of insulin-stimulated proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells by rosiglitazone is mediated by the Akt-mTOR-P70S6K pathway.
Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are known to inhibit the proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) by increasing the activity of p27Kip1 and retinoblastoma protein (RB). However, the upstream signaling mechanisms associated with this pathway have not been elucidated. The Akt-mTOR-P70S6 kinase pathway is the central regulator of cell growth and proliferation, and increases cell proliferation by inhibiting the activities of p27Kip1 and retinoblastoma protein (RB). Therefore, we hypothesized in this study that rosiglitazone inhibits VSMC proliferation through the inhibition of the Akt-TOR-P70S6K signaling pathway. ⋯ The inhibitory effect of rosiglitazone on RAoSMC proliferation in vitro and in vivo is mediated by the inhibition of the Akt-mTOR-P70S6K pathway.
