The search for a minimally invasive approach to the treatment of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) suggestive of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is probably as old as Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP). In an effort to overcome the limitations and morbidities of TURP, and in light of evidence suggesting that medical treatment for BPH has a limited life-span, laser-based treatments have emerged during the last decade. Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (PVP) by the "GreenLight" KTP laser is considered one of the most promising options, one that is constantly evolving new technologies in prostate surgery. In this overview of KTP laser usage in BPH treatment, we will briefly discuss the evolution of this modality since it was first introduced and focus on the available evidence regarding safety, efficacy and cost parameters of its application.

Randomized Controlled TrialRemifentanil prevents withdrawal movements caused by intravenous injection of rocuronium.
The incidence of pain induced withdrawal movement following intravenous injection of rocuronium is high. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was designed to evaluate the effect of pretreatment of remifentanil on the withdrawal movements due to intravenous injection of rocuronium during anesthetic induction. ⋯ The pretreatment with 0.5 and 1.0 microg/kg remifentanil of bolus doses prevented the withdrawal movements caused by rocuronium injection, and effectively blunted cardiovascular activation following tracheal intubation.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyComparison of remifentanil and fentanyl for postoperative pain control after abdominal hysterectomy.
In this randomized, double-blind study, we investigated the analgesic efficacy and side effects of continuous constant-dose infusions of remifentanil after total abdominal hysterectomy and compared it to fentanyl. ⋯ Continuous infusion technique of remifentanil did not reveal any benefits compared to fentanyl. Furthermore, it is not safe for postoperative analgesia in the general ward.

The effect of lowering the threshold for diagnosis of impaired fasting glucose.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of lowering the fasting plasma glucose (FPG) criteria for impaired fasting glucose (IFG) on the prevalence of IFG and the risk for the development of diabetes associated with IFG in Koreans. ⋯ Lowering the FPG criterion of IFG should have benefits in predicting new onset type 2 diabetes mellitus in Koreans. The economic and health benefits of applying the new IFG criteria should be evaluated in future studies.

The effect of HIF-1alpha siRNA on growth and chemosensitivity of MIA-paca cell line.
Hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha (HIF-1alpha) primarily mediates the hypoxic response. HIF-1alpha induction by various stimuli contributes to cell proliferation and survival. To investigate the effect of HIF-1alpha, we used small interfering RNA (siRNA), and expected that cell apoptosis and sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drug increase, when we blocked the HIF-1alpha gene. Thus we performed in vitro and in vivo experiment to clarify the effect of hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha on tumor growth. ⋯ The suppression of HIF-1alpha results in decrease of cell proliferation and increase of chemosensitivity of pancreatic cancer cell line. Therefore, targeting the HIF-1alpha may be useful treatment modality for some pancreatic cancers.
