An Analysis of Major Causes of Surgical Failure Using Bähren System in Intraoperative Venography During Varicocelectomy.
In young patients with varicocele, preservation of the internal spermatic artery may be advantageous for catch-up growth, but it may also increase the likelihood of treatment failure. Intraoperative venography reduces the likelihood that unsealed veins will remain after varicocelectomy. We analyzed the characteristics of remnant veins visualized through intraoperative venography to investigate the cause of surgical failure in artery-sparing varicocelectomy (ASV). ⋯ Remnant collateral veins of the internal spermatic vein (ISV) (Bahren type 3) are the most common cause of failure in ASV. In a few patients, an external spermatic vein merges with the ISV at a higher level (Bahren type 4) and is unidentifiable without venography.

Continued Upward Trend in Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria Isolation over 13 Years in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Korea.
Despite decreased prevalence of tuberculosis, the incidence of the diseases associated with nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) has been increasing in South Korea and around the world. The present retrospective study was conducted to determine longitudinal changes in the epidemiology and distribution of NTM over 13 years at a tertiary care hospital in Korea. ⋯ The number of NTM isolates continuously increased over the study period, and the increase in the proportion of M.intracellulare in patients aged over 70 years was notable.

Influence of the Amount of Fresh Specimen on the Isolation of Tumor Mesenchymal Stem-Like Cells from High-Grade Glioma.
A critical indicator of the overall survival of patients with high-grade glioma is the successful isolation of tumor mesenchymal stem-like cells (tMSLCs), which play important roles in glioma progression. However, attempts to isolate tMSLCs from surgical specimens have not always been successful, and the reasons for this remain unclear. Considering that the amount of surgical high-grade glioma specimens varies, we hypothesized that larger surgical specimens would be better for tMSLC isolation. ⋯ Our results suggested a minimum criterion for specimen collection, and found that the specimen amount was not deeply related to tMSLC detection. Collectively, our findings imply that the ability to isolate tMSLCs is determined by factors other than the specimen amount.

Modified Procedures for ALPPS Based on a Risk-Reduced Strategy: Paralleled Clinical Evaluation at Multiple Institutions.
We compared the clinical outcomes of modified procedures for associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) based on a risk-reduced strategy with those of classic ALPPS procedures in treating large liver carcinoma. ⋯ Modified ALPPS procedures could be safely applied to provide long-term survival for patients with liver cirrhosis without sufficient FLR.

Mortality of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder Using Data from a Large-Scale Korean National Cohort.
This study aimed to investigate the association between autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis and mortality among children using the data from a large-scale national cohort of Korean infants and children. We also explored the association between hearing impairment detected during early infancy and mortality. ⋯ ASD diagnosis was associated with higher mortality among Korean children. This association was stronger in girls than in boys. Hearing impairment detected during infancy was also associated with higher mortality among children diagnosed with ASD.
