Comparative StudyPaediatric minor oral surgical procedures under inhalation sedation and general anaesthetic: a comparison of variety and duration of treatment.
To develop baseline data in relation to paediatric minor oral surgical procedures undertaken with both general anaesthesia and nitrous oxide inhalation sedation within a Hospital Dental Service. ⋯ The majority of paediatric minor oral surgical procedures entail surgical exposure or removal of impacted teeth. The median treatment time for most procedures undertaken with either general anaesthetic or nitrous oxide sedation was 30 minutes.

Child rearing styles, dental anxiety and disruptive behaviour; an exploratory study.
This was to explore the relation between children's dental anxiety, their behaviour during treatment and their parent's rearing style. Also the parents' preparation of the child for dental treatment was related to behaviour and parental rearing style. ⋯ Dental anxiety correlated positively with the behaviour displayed during treatment. No relation was found between parenting style and dental anxiety and behaviour during treatment. Parents showed more confidence in the child-dentist dyad after the rehabilitation of their child's teeth.

Dental anxiety and psychological functioning in children: its relationship with behaviour during treatment.
In this study the relationship between the levels of dental anxiety, psychological functioning and earlier experience with dental injections are examined and the possible influence of these factors on children's behaviour before and during a local anaesthesia injection. ⋯ The level of dental anxiety and psychological functioning and recent previous dental experience are important factors in determining which child is likely to display more anxiety and uncooperative behaviour during treatment and therefore potentially need more attention to be able to cope well with dental treatment.

Short communication: dental anxiety levels and outcomes of care: a preliminary report on experiences of a sedation assessment clinic.
This was twofold: (1) to report on the type of paediatric patient referred to the sedation assessment clinic at the Glasgow Dental Hospital and School, and (2) to report on the level of anxiety. ⋯ (1) The patients attending the newly established sedation assessment clinic were mainly high caries risk, socially deprived patients and (2) that the majority of patients were dentally anxious, the most anxious appearing to have been referred for treatment under general anaesthesia.

Comparative StudyA report on dental anxiety levels in children undergoing nitrous oxide inhalation sedation and propofol target controlled infusion intravenous sedation.
To report on two separate child sedation cohorts; one undergoing propofol intravenous sedation (IVS) and the other, nitrous oxide inhalation sedation (IS) in respect to changes in dental anxiety and subject characteristics. ⋯ Propofol target-controlled intravenous sedation and nitrous oxide inhalation sedation were similarly efficacious at anxiety reduction in referred dentally anxious children. Subjects undergoing propofol IVS were older than those undergoing IS. Propofol TCI may offer the opportunity for more treatment at each visit. Further propofol TCI conscious sedation studies are required.
