ReviewSkull base manifestations of Camurati-Engelmann disease.
To describe presenting symptoms, evaluation findings, and surgical management of cranial base hyperostosis in patients with Camurati-Engelmann disease (CED). ⋯ Physicians should include CED in the differential diagnosis for patients with radiographic evidence of skull base thickening and synchronous cranial neuropathies or symptoms of elevated intracranial pressure. In mild forms of the disease, the clinical course of patients should be followed with serial examination, audiometric testing, and radiography. In select patients with progressive cranial base symptoms, aggressive wide decompression of involved neurovascular structures may provide benefit.

Comparative StudyTotal thyroidectomy with and without selective central compartment dissection: a comparison of complication rates.
To compare the postoperative complications between patients who underwent total thyroidectomy (TT) with central compartment lymph node dissection (CLND) and those who underwent only TT. ⋯ Adding CLND to TT does not increase postoperative hypocalcemia or vocal cord paralysis. These results suggest that in the hands of experienced thyroid oncologic surgeons, elective selective CLND can be performed safely for papillary thyroid cancer and should be considered in higher-risk patients to potentially reduce the risk of reoperation in the central compartment.

Robotic-assisted surgery for primary or recurrent oropharyngeal carcinoma.
To determine the feasibility of robotic-assisted salvage surgery for oropharyngeal cancer. ⋯ When feasible, robotic-assisted surgery is an acceptable procedure for resection of both primary and recurrent oropharyngeal tumors. Trial Registration clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT00473564.

Management of foreign bodies obstructing the airway in children.
To review national trends in the management of pediatric airway foreign bodies (A-FBs) and esophageal foreign bodies (E-FBs) that obstruct the airway. ⋯ Pediatric A-FBs and E-FBs that obstruct the airway occur infrequently. Most of the patients are referred to teaching institutions. Among patients who were admitted with a diagnosis of airway obstruction from an A-FB or an E-FB, the rates of positive findings at surgery were 37% and 46%, respectively. A surprisingly high mortality rate was noted. Alternative education measures should be considered to train physicians in the management of this infrequent, potentially lethal condition.
