Comparative StudyEffect of recurrent laryngeal nerve identification technique in thyroidectomy on recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis and hypoparathyroidism.
To investigate whether the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) identification technique used in thyroidectomy affects RLN paralysis and hypoparathyroidism. ⋯ Comparing the 2 groups based on the frequencies of RLN paralysis and hypoparathyroidism, we found that complications were significantly lower in the first group (P < .05) in terms of hypoparathyroidism. The rate of hypoparathyroidism was significantly lower in the thyroidectomies that located the RLN using the superior-inferior approach. In our hands, the superior-inferior approach was a safer technique, in terms of avoiding complications.

Pediatric tracheal and endobronchial tumors: an institutional experience.
To report the pathologic findings in cases involving endotracheal and endobronchial tumors in the pediatric population and to describe the presenting symptoms and treatment modalities for endotracheal and endobronchial tumors. ⋯ The results of this series suggest that in the pediatric population tracheal and endobronchial tumors are most likely to be carcinoid tumors or mucoepidermoid carcinomas, both malignant processes. For patients with recurrent pneumonias or chronic wheezing, an occult tumor is a diagnostic consideration that may require additional studies.

Online script concordance test for clinical reasoning assessment in otorhinolaryngology: the association between performance and clinical experience.
To report on the creation and administration of an online Script Concordance Test (SCT) for ear, nose, and throat (ENT), the ENT-SCT. ⋯ The Web-based ENT-SCT is feasible, reliable, and useful for assessing clinical reasoning. This online assessment tool may have applications for residency programs and continuing medical education.

Comparative StudyEffect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty on positional dependency in obstructive sleep apnea.
To assess the effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) on positional dependency in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). ⋯ Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty is successful treatment for obstructive events occurring in the lateral sleep position, especially in patients without positional dependency. This implies that patients who have become position dependent may benefit from positional therapy after UPPP.

Comparative StudyPractice patterns after tracheotomy in infants younger than 2 years.
To report survey results of members of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) on the practice patterns of surveillance endoscopy and management of suprastomal granuloma (SSG) in children younger than 2 years with indwelling tracheostomy tubes and to review our internal practice patterns. ⋯ There are currently various practice patterns for surveillance endoscopy and management of SSG in children younger than 2 years with indwelling tracheostomy tubes. Development of clinical practice guidelines on this topic may improve patient care and reduce unnecessary procedures.
